We have revised the list of science applications on malariacontrol.net. This was necessary to make the release of future versions of the main science application more flexible and more efficient. Heres why: Up to now we had always one production version of the main science application (malariacontrol.net) running. This required that new releases of this had to be backward-compatible, i.e. they were able to process workunits that were created at an earlier time. This was an annoying constraint, which we now try to remove by having two parallel versions of the main science application. We call them openMalaria Branch A and openMalaria Branch B. We plan to use them in alternating sequence, with occasional overlaps.

As a consequence, we had to make some modifications to both the web-page which allows you to choose which applications to run by setting your malariacontrol.net preferences (here), as well as to the database table which stores these preferences: We adapted your setting to the new application names, following the priciple that everyone who opted to run the current main application (malariacontrol.net), should now also receive workunits for both openMalaria Branch A and openMalaria Branch B. It seems like the update completed smoothly, but let us know if you are experiencing problems with your preference settings.

Here is a short explanation of the purpose and status of all applications that are listed on our application list .

malariacontrol.net: The current main science application, an implementation of an individual-based model of malaria epidemology and control. We dont expect to use this much longer, except for occasional small follow-up work on previous simulation studies.

Prediction of Malaria Prevalence: Used for malaria risk-mapping. This has not been used in some time, and currently there are not plans for re-activating it. The scientific article was published recently: Gosoniu L, Vounatsou P, Sogoba N, Maire N, Smith T. Mapping malaria risk in West Africa using a Bayesian nonparametric non-stationary model. Computational Statistics and Data Analysis 53: 3358-3371. (2009)

openMalaria test version: The test application, previously called malariacontrol.net test application, which we plan to keep using in the future. Note that this is on an opt-in basis, if you want to help test new applications (with a higher risk of crashes), you have to change your malariacontrol.net preferences accordingly (here), unless you have already done so.

Estimation of parameters of infection dynamics: Currently not active.

openMalaria: A simulator of malaria epidemology and control, "Branch A" and "Branch B": The new main science applications. The team is getting the next release ready.

Thank you very much for the NOT SO short explanation about the project updates, really appreciated! I'll crunch for it as much as I can, together with other BOINC project, it's worth!
Have a good day.

Despite the reassuring messages that the project is back to work, I'm still having a systematic error message: HTTP service unavailable

Generally speaking if you just shut down Boinc, by exiting it altogether, and then restarting Boinc it should pick right back up again. This usually happens when the IP address either changes on their end or Boinc forgets where it is supposed to be looking.

Guilllaume and Nick: thanks for all the hard work...we look forward to effective programs to eradicate malaria. There is much work to be done of which this number crunching is but one part. It appears to me that major shifts in political will, together with significant cultural changes in the affected areas of the world, are also needed to achieve the eradication of malaria.

Better late, then never, I can only agree with your point of view, so I joined
this search, our climate is warming up and malaria, may show up in Europe, as
well. Spread in regions warming up and disappear in regions getting too cold,
for this disease carrying mosquito!
