This news article provides some insight into the debate around the elimination of malaria. The Lancet has just published a series of papers and comments on the subject.

I've just found several related articles on using BOINC-based methods for malaria control (although apparantly not elimination yet). Produced by a collaboration of several research teams. One helped develop software for this purpose at Rosetta@Home, so the Malaria Control developers might want to ask them about getting copies of that software at a reasonable price, if they weren't also one of the research teams involved.

Also, another article apparantly less related to the others:

Thanks for posting this. I have downloaded and printed the dense article (I'm a lot older than you...) for reading.

          Greetings all,

I found an interesting article that some of you may find interesting/helpful, as well.

"Smartphone app displays microscopic view of malaria"

Malaria still kills nearly 1 million people a year, and most of those are children under 5. So a team of students across the nation created a smartphone app that could help lower those numbers by providing a microscopic view of the sample in the field.

          Thanks.

An article on a malaria drug candidate:

I haven't found yet whether the WCG project helped to find it.

Malaria Control and Elimination in Sri Lanka

Citation: Abeyasinghe RR, Galappaththy GNL, Smith Gueye C, Kahn JG, Feachem RGA (2012) Malaria Control and Elimination in Sri Lanka: Documenting Progress and Success Factors in a Conflict Setting. PLoS ONE 7(8): e43162. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0043162

                  Published: August 29, 2012

Malaria incidence in Sri Lanka has declined by 99.9% since 1999. During this time, there were increases in the proportion of malaria infections due to Plasmodium vivax, and the proportion of infections occurring in adult males.

Malaria is now at low levels in Sri Lanka – 124 indigenous cases were found in 2011. Evidence-driven policy and an ability to adapt to new circumstances contributed to this decline. Malaria interventions were maintained in the conflict districts despite an ongoing war. Sri Lanka has set a goal of eliminating malaria by the end of 2014. Early identification and treatment of infections, especially imported ones, together with effective surveillance and response, will be critical to achieving this goal.

Carte Blanche just broadcast an insert about the potential single-dose malaria cure MMV-390048.

                      Sounds quite promising.
