Thank you for the last game WIN.
-
Soory I couldn't start a new game, i'm not sure how much i'll be visiting here with all the projects I have going.

Now for something really scarry, i jsut saw the Bomb Squad racing up the road with the siren on. Which is scarrier, the fact that they are going somewhere or the fact that we actually have one ?
-
Just glad they didn't stop here.

WINNING while hiding under the desk.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

Thanks, oldest daughter (and S.O.) bought me a Blue Ray burner. If I take it back for trade-in and slap down another $20, I can upgrade to a dual layer Blue Ray burner. Right now, the cost of single-layer Blue Ray blanks is too high, much less getting the even more expensive dual layer ones. I'll just keep the one I got.

Also, I promised my wife I would not re-convert the videos I converted from VHS to DVD up to the next higher format (Blue Ray). So I guess I keep the DVDs and move on from here only with new movies. However, now I can start buying Blue Ray movies and make copies of them (for backup purposes of course).

Hey I wouldn't convert all the old dvd's over either, the new player should play them just fine shouldn't it?

It is only 49F this morning, it feels MUCH BETTER than when it was 100F!!! For the next few days it isn't even supposed to get 70F for a HIGH!! I LOVE IT!!!

Rain at last! Now it's my turn to win.

NO...no more rain!!! We had 5 months of rain in just one week a couple of weeks ago! I got over 7 inches of rain in my deck mounted rain gauge in just 2 days! That was from TS Lee that followed me up from New Orleans.

It is nice and cool here, in the 50'sF and not getting out of the low 70's today! Then a short stretch of mid 70's for highs then back down in the 60's for next weekend! WOO HOO!! That makes me WINNING!!!

Well, looks like rain tonight, rain tomorrow, rain tomorrow night. Then a break for a day with 30% chance of rain on Wednesday.

Around here, we went from summer on the day before Labor day to autumn on Labor day. And it's pretty much been that cool ever since. Sunday, Sept. 4th our high was in the low 90sF, but Labor day the high was 72F. We've hit 80F only one day since then. The nights have been 40sF and 50sF ever since too.

Stopped to get gas this morning. Couldn't really pass it up...cash price was 20c/gal cheaper than the area average. Too bad I drive a Prius...only took 4.7 gals. Tank mpg came out to just under 62mpg.

The current Ford Focus ECONetic 1.6 diesel produces 115g CO2/km and does 65.6mpg

The new Focus ECONetic due for UK launch next Spring will produce 85gCO2/km and give 86.9mpg.

Ah, yes! Let the FUD begin!

Consider the following:
1. A gallon of diesel fuel contains more energy than a gallon of gasoline
2. The above economy rating is in Imperial gallons, which is approximately equal to 1.201 US gallons
3. The Prius available today produces 89gCO2/km, which is close enough to 85gCO2.km to be considered the same and is ~22% better than today's Focus Diesel putting out 115gCO2/km.
4. The Prius TODAY gets 72 mpg on gasoline (12% lower energy content than diesel). i.e. if gasoline had the same energy content as diesel, the Prius would get ~80.5 mpg.

And last but not least, air pollution is not just a CO2 rating. There's the NOx and sulpher (think acid rain) components too, among others. To illustrate, click this link:

Toyota: Prius emissions less harmful than a sheep's, um, emissions

You are correct in many of the points raised, RandyC, but technology moves on and the new generations of hybrids, extended range EVs and conventional diesels will compete on an increasingly better scale from 2012 and on. We are seeing a whole step change in the new generation of (shall we call) IC engine development.

Regarding the higher NOx output of diesels, due to their higher more efficient temperature burn. The use of EGR and latterly NOx catalysts are achieving lower NOx emissions than petrol.

Sulphur, as SO2, emissions are not an issue, at least in urope, as the sulphur content of the fuel has been almost completely removed. This happened over 15 years ago, so is now a forgotten pollutant, when leag tetraethyl was removed from petrol as an anti-knock.

My personal choice in the application of mixed IC engine and electric propulsion combinations leans to extended range EVs. This means the generator IC (petrol or diesel) can be optimised for emissions as tit is designed to run at 50/60Hz and cope with changing electrical loads. Not as present used to drive the wheels on one of the vehicle's axle (as per Prius).

Is the Sulfur the black exhaust gases coming out, we don't have much of that low Sulfur stuff here in the US yet. We have way too many over the road big trucks that would be impacted if that happened over night too, so that will be awhile before that switch happens. Yes the new CAR diesel offerings from many manufacturers DO use the low Sulfur fuel but since it is not available in some areas yet, people are just using what they can find. I did that in a rental car once, I was out of gas and the gas station had nothing but high test and E-85, I did not know that E-85 will ruin things if your vehicle is not designed for it and in it went! A whole tank full of E-85 gasoline into a rental car at a very cheap price, man I thought I doing the 'right thing' but boy was I wrong!!! They never called me or anything, the next few tanks I put in were regular gas again, but I am sure those seals did not like it!

@mikey, no, the black stuff coming out is pure carbon particulates. SO2 is basically invisible, but you can sure smell it! Personally, I don't want to be breathing any of it myself.

@John Clark, for the most part I agree with you. The Prius will be offered next year with a 15 mile all-electric range plug-in option. The main advantage to this is that it cuts out oil usage for all those 3-5 mile quickie-run-to-the-store and back trips.

I personally would prefer an all-electric vehicle for daily usage and a long-range vehicle for the few times per year I travel farther than 100 miles in a day. However, what works for me, doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. One car does not fit all, and sometimes not even any specific person's annual needs.

In the US, the average commuter needs a vehicle that can travel 30-45 miles one way on all-electric drive at 70 mph. AND they need something for those occasional trips longer than that. The Chevy Volt comes close to that, but per usual, GM screwed it up. The Prius plug-in would do the job if its battery were larger, but for some reason Toyota chose not to do that.

The primary problem with all-electric vehicles today is NOT the limited range and time to recharge. It's the fact that the electric grid is still quite dirty. The advantage is that the grid CAN and IS being cleaned up. And as the grid gets cleaned up, the 'long tailpipe' that detractors speak of for EVs gets cleaner as well. It's a lot easier to scrub pollutants at a single location than it is to clean the exhaust of millions of point sources (cars/trucks).

Sorry Mikey

The black fume coming from the tail pipe is soot, which can happen with both petrol and diesels. It usually indicates over fuelling and the results of a sudden demand can result in incomplete combustion. The soot is a result of incomplete combustion and the burning fuel droplets burn down to a soot particle.

For petrol engines these soot particles are in the size range 0.5micron to 2micron. When therse particles are inhaled they can get in to the blood stream and thicken the blood slowing blood flow. For diesel soot the particle range is larger (5micron to 10micron) and usually caught by the mucus and cilla in the respritory system.

Both are undesirable, but catching diesel soot is much easier than petrol soot because of the particle size difference.

Fuel injected petrol cars usually inject the fuel at around 750psi to 1,000psi.

The third generation common rail diesels inject (currently) at up to 1,800 bar (26,500psi). These are injected using piezoelectric opening/shutting valves which inject up to 6 lots of fuel on the power stroke. The result is a very clean burn, little or no particulate matter (soot) and low NOx (due to EGR and NOx catalysts). For diesels where the soot is close to the Euro 4 or 5 emission standards then soot capture filters and regeneration systems are used.

I found a new use for my computer stack.

After the laundry is done, I hang my shirts over in front of the multitude of gpus exhaust ports, in no time at all they are dry.

Hey! That's a good idea.

I get tired of taking my wash-and-wear shirts out of the washer and putting them on still wet.

Back in the 1960s when the white/greenish bry-nylon drip dry shirts were around, I wore mine in to the shower and washed then while still on. They then dripped dry for the following morning, with no creases or ironing.

Bad news peeps...my primary computer is currently DEAD.

This is the system I use to record and process video. Current suspects are:
1. Bad HDD
2. Video card problems

That particular system has been running almost constantly since May of 2007. Time off for occasional HW (memory/video card) updates, but otherwise on constantly.

So far as any software issues...the last thing I did was install this month's M$ updates. But far be it for me to blame Bill Gates for my little system issues.

Well hopefully it will come back up shortly then! I did the updates too and, knocking on wood, haven't seen any new problems! It could be your power supply too, they can be finicky sometimes. Do you have a Linux boot disk to see what works and what doesn't? I personally like the Ubuntu ones but anyone will let you boot off the cd and then you can see what works and what doesn't.

Went to Microcenter yesterday and bought a new HDD and video card. Currently transferring data from old HDD (400GB) to new (1TB). Problem is not in Windows because booting Norton Ghost from floppy (yes, I still have one) is also locking up. I'm converting all partitions to NTSF from FAT32 now.

Things to try when I get off w@^k:
o reseat everything on the MB
o replace video card with new one
o double-check cpu heatsink fasteners are not loose/cracked
o cry

PS is fairly new 430W unit...unlikely to be the issue.

Not WINNING!!!

[edit]I had taken the system out a day or two before the trouble started and blew all the dust out...there was a TON of it! I suspect something may have worked loose at that point, but maybe not.[/edit]

Nice Mikey

Those lobsters should be great.

In my case, apart from prawns, I cannot eat shell fish due to something I inherited from my mother.

I ate a very small portion of crab stick, in vol au vents, and came up in hives. All my joints stiffened up and I had great purple blotches associated with each joint. It took 2 weeks to go away, and no shell fish consumed since.

That day I definitely was not winning.

Definitely no joy here yet. Reseated all components; even swapped the cpu for an older one (boy did that one crash quick!). Haven't swapped the video card yet. I was hoping to get going without it and maybe return it. No luck yet...might as well open it up.

Well, no good with that either. No display at all with new card. Didn't even get to POST bios display. Went back to the old one.

This MB is so old(2007?) I guess it doesn't support the newer PCIe cards.

I really don't want to go the whole system replacement route. I really don't have tons of $$$ to throw at this.

At this point I'm considering taking the other dual core system and reworking it for my video capture system. I could put the new HDD and video card in it, but I'd probably want to shutdown BOINC on it.

...confused and considering various options.

BTW, my quad system just dump all it's Einstein cpu cache as errored out. Took it apart and cleaned it out--the temp gauge was reading ~155F so I know it needed it. Running with MCN cpu and E@H cuda it's now down to 130F.

I got my ad last week from Micro Center and they had 40 dollar mb's on sale, maybe one of them will work for you? Obviously it is not a real powerful one but maybe you can get the pc back up and running with one.

JohnC I don't know what that is, the joint problems, but I SURE don't want it!! I have Gout and that is bad enough for me to take medication everyday to keep the levels low, Gout too is inherited! My ankles swell up and turn bright red and man does it hurt when it flares up, can't even look at it without it hurting! Gout too is in the joints. I can remember my grandfather having attacks, I didn't know what it was at the time and don't know if he did or not, but after a few days it calms down and is better.

Wish it was that easy. The current cpu is an Athlon X2. The only MBs in stock at my local Microcenter are Socket AM3/AM3+ which I think will NOT support my cpu. The cheapest supported cpu in stock for the cheapest MB is $150. Also need new memory, but that's only $20.

Total cost I'm looking at: $243.77 for cpy/mb/memory. MB has $10 rebate though.

OK. Did a little more searching on the Microcenter website. It just so happens that the MB and CPU are being offered as a bundle. that brings my out-the-door total to about $191, and another $10 off with a mail-in rebate.

Pulled the trigger on their 18-minute in-store pickup (Hoo-boy what a laugh that was last time I did it...more like 18-minute wait at the store to get it!) and I'll go get it after w@^k.

Alright, so consecutive posts disqualify me from winning...too bad!

Just an update on system woes:

New MB/cpu/memory installed.
Bad: I didn't realize the MB didn't have a floppy controller...makes it hard to boot ghost.
Good: I had a bootable DOS CD.

The system came up and is running ghost right now copying the final partition.

The old video card and cpu did not fit, so I was right to replace them. The old video card would work if I didn't have to use the PCIe 1x slot next to the 16x slot. That's for my video capture card. Lucky the new video card is slim.

Bad: video card fan is partially blocked by video capture card.

Good: new cpu has 6 cores!!!

With all this, maybe I am...

WINNING!!!

[edit]Ghost copy completed successfully, but attempt to boot Windows failed. No surprise there. Now down a Windoze install.[/edit]

Is the old mb dead and unusable? If not then maybe you could set it up to do the video capture and the new one to crunch and be your day to day machine. Is the video capture card a pci-e card?

On my way out of town shortly, that makes me WINNING!!!

@Mikey,
Enjoy the lobster.

@John,
I feel for you. I too have a slight problem. I can eat shrimp and crab, maybe lobster but haven't had much of that. I don't eat much shrimp (8 pieces) or crab either, i had some king crab legs once in 13 years, no other crab. But if I eat clams, oysters or scallops I get voilently sick, I mean it comes up chunky green and it spews out like a volcano erupting. Even a small amount. I had a cup of clam chowder after I moved down here, not having had stuff like that for years, i got very ill off just that one cup. Haven't had any more in 13 years. I kind of don't eat a lot of fish either, that sometimes tastes weird to me too, although i've never gotten sick from fish. Too bad as this is a fishing community.

One of my brothers has a reaction to tomatoes, he turns red from them, so no tomatoes, tomatoes sauce or even ketchup.

My dad was stationed in Alaska in the 60's and we used to buy Alaska King Crabs for 1 DOLLAR A CRAB!!! We used to eat them by the bushel full!!! My dad was in the Air Force so we were in Eilson AFB which is just outside of Fairbanks, so they didn't bring the crabs but once a week! Obviously seafood is not a problem for me, my dad though can't eat processed seafood but can eat the fresh stuff with no problem. I sort of feel for you guys but it just leaves more for folks like me!!!

RandC any news on the new pc?

I am in Nashua, NH right now, long one day drive for me, about 7 hours, and am at a Radisson for the night. They are SUPPOSED to have the Sleep Number bed but not in my room and when I called down the lady was very evasive except to say they have none available. Radisson quality sure has gone down hill lately, you can see where they patched the wall with little round stickies and then painted over them where something used to be on the wall. The are like 10 stickies all in a row on the wall, they have been there a while too. I guess on the good side they do have 'N' wireless so I am cruising thru the net.

Oh well I need to get a move on as I need to make two stops before my next 4 hour drive to where my wifes photo class is. We have to be there before 4pm as her first class is at 5pm with no time limit on when it ends.

My dad was AF too. We spent the 60s first in the mid-west, then a short stint in Delaware, then off to Guam for 2 1/2 years. He retired in Delaware after that tour.

The PC itself is running great, but it's always a fight re-installing Windoze and all my software. Right now I can't get my video HW/Software to talk to each other. I'm probably missing something...minimum of DirectX still.

I'm having troubles with Firefox too. I can only use it in safe mode. When I first brought it up it wanted to upgrade some kind of .net extension, but it hung because I hadn't done the .net update after Windoze install. With it disabled in Safe Mode, I can run, but all other add-ins are disabled too. Need to figure out how to fix/remove that extension and it should work ok.

Kinda depressed because by now I should be...

A long time ago I bought one of those FoodSaver vacuum sealers. I was big into that before I moved here to NC back in 97. Skip ahead, i'm working on cleaning out my pantry and using up as much old stuff as possible and reducing the amount of "stock" piles. Found some jars of sealed cereal. Opened up one, smelled great. Sample taste and it was crispy and crunchy like i had just opened a new box. Added some soy milk and it was great.

Here's the kicker, I haven't sealed any jars since before I moved, so this cereal is, uh, at least 14 years old.

That is good to know Keith, I have one too and use it when I buy bagels. I buy 18 bagels at a time, it is a whole batch and that way I don't just get whatever is leftover when I come in. Anyway when I get home I freeze them 2 to a bag and then eat them 1 per day, when I am not eating my eggs for breakfast. I will go thru the 18 bagels in about a month and they are all as good as the day I bought them.

It rained all the way from lower NH yesterday to middle NH where I am now. 3 hours in the rain at 75mph, the new car handles great. My wife replaced her Honda Accord in August with a Honda CRV as the Accord had 125k on it and she was scared. She would not listen and since her new job is allowing her to pay for it it is okay.

Still in the high 60's,low 70's here daytime, 65F nights.

I'm still so tired and i get extra sleep now. I've stopped going in at 7am, back to near 9am. Internet orders have slowed, the season is over. local sales are even worse since the big wind bag blew threw. This is the time of year it slows, then really slow thru winter, but this year is already slower than really slow winter time. I have little paperwork to do. Not much internet sales. I can spend 3 hours a day watching a static screen, even browsing the net has become boring, i done it all. Today I watched a fly go around in circles here and there for an hour, then we got a wrong number phone call.

Down south it may take 6 months to rebuild roads and a bridge and get things back to near normal, we don't expect much business from that direction, which wasn't much to start with.

Tourism is mostly over for the year, so the charter fishing drops off, so less business from them, if they are even still afloat. A lot of people have thier homes to worry about first before they fix up the boat or go for a charter. So little duirect business and little business from the charter guys since they have no busness either and no money to fix things up.

Oh well, bedtime now, i'm wiped out. I only have enough energy to lay still and watch some streaming or dvds. I'll be asleep by 10pm.

oh, my clock says it is WINNING-Oh-thirty !!!

I've just gotten a hint of why I might be having so much trouble with my video capture HW. I installed Wntipcfg (from MS). This is a utility that lets you release/renew your network adapter IP address...and other stuff.

Looking at the info it provides on the network adapter, I noticed my IP address was 0.1.0.4, which is pretty much garbage. I also noticed it ID'd my adapter as a Broadcast Ethernet device--more garbage. When I reboot, sometimes it displays the real network adapter, sometimes this garbage stuff. I'm thinking there is a HW conflict between the TV card and the network adapter.

Getting a few clues and...

Ah, a fellow sufferer. I've had mine surgically reamed out twice, my doctor has put me on notice that there may be a third time in my future. Sorry if all that is TMI, I'll stop now.

I have not been reamed yet and would not like the prospect if the Dr. advised it!!

Keith you could always get a jump on the inventory.....it's a good the internet is between us right now!!!

RandyC do you have a spare pci card you can use as the ethernet card? Sometimes I have to use one of those before Windows update finds the real card, especially if I am going wireless.

It is in the mid 20'sF here this morning, the photo workshop crew left at 6AM but should be back by 11AM as that is check out time for the motel. The motel itself is not a 5 star or even a 3 star motel, it is like those old 60's style strip motels in the movies, but is adequate for our needs. They come and clean the room every day, providing clean towels etc, so all is good. I am getting lots ogenealogy work done as they do have wireless 'N' internet.

I could probably dig up an ethernet card somewhere. Major problem is it would be limited to 10/100 mbs instead of the 1gb on the motherboard.

I was going to pull the TV card and just try the USB HD-PVR unit by itself. Maybe if it does work, I'll go back and add the ethernet card and the TV card for testing.

Well, I successfully (I hope) recorded a video off cable last night. Still need to process it for DVD before I declare 'victory'.

Some issues still:
o Programmed recorder launch (i.e. start/stop at unattended time) failing. Have to start capture manually.
o Two hour show took up 8GB of disk space...was recorded in HD.

Positive: have Ghost back-up of OS with HD-PVR running successfully(?).

So do you have the pc connected between the wall and the cable box or between the cable box and the tv, or is there like a 'Y' connector from the cable box to both the tv and the pc? I am looking to do something similar but need some details. In my case I MUST use the cable box to get access to the different channels. Do you have a monitor connected to the pc or do you just use the tv screen? Will a non pci-e card work for HD, as in just a pci card? I have lots of pc's and hard drives laying around.

I am now in Concord, Mass at a Best Western Plus, it is MUCH better quality than the Radisson I stayed in the other night!! We need to do some laundry so we will be here two nights, they have laundry machines on site for us to use. Monday around lunch time or so I need to be in Bar Harbor Maine for the next photo workshop for my wife. In between we are being flexible and doing some sightseeing, genealogy, etc.

Here's my set-up:
I have (err...had) two ways to connect to cable. The first was the Hauppauge PCIe WinTV card...not currently working right. The second was a USB device: Hauppauge HD-PVR. Both devices are hooked into the cable box via component or S-video connectors (component [5wire] for HD-PVR, S-video for WinTV card). The WinTV card does not do HD recording due to the type of connecters used. The cable box DOES translate HD to lower quality S-video/composite output, so the shows CAN be recorded, just not in HD quality.

I've got the WinTV card disabled in Windoze currently and will probably uninstall it. It's blocking airflow to the Video card along with the HW conflict issue.

I use my PC monitor to do video recording and editing. The shows get burned to DVD (and maybe near future Blu-Ray) that I play on the TV. I have two cable boxes--one for the TV, the other for recording. There is a splitter for the cable wire to go to each box separately.

You'll have to do your own searching on what's best for you for video capture. There are several options available, but I'd stay away from the USB-stick type if I were you. The HD-PVR system is good, but might be pricey. The WinTV card is good too if you have an available PCIe slot and don't have HW conflicts. :(

Note: if you're still using XP Pro, software support for these products is MINIMAL! I KNOW!!! I'm fighting it right now!

If you're going to get into this type of thing, be prepared to spend $$$ for a minimum of Video Editing and DVD Authoring software. I recommend the TMPEGenc suite of products. They ARE available as trial products, but the trial Authoring tool puts a watermark on the Menu.

There IS a Freeware video editing tool (Freemake Video Converter) which works OK, but is kinda difficult to position for cutting commercials out.

Thank you that should get me started at least. It will be at least another week though as today I head to Maine, from Concord Mass, for about a week. The XP problem you are having should not affect me as most of my machines have Win7. I do have an older WinTV card I may try out when I get back, it is a pci card I think. It was in a pc I donated so out it came and into the box of extras it went.

Mee too. i've never used them. Got 3 PCI version in the spares drawer, probally some more at work. I know none of them are PCIe. How many should I mail to you ?

Sorry, but time for team bragging, as my team just passed the boinc.at team last night as we moved up to 30th. We were only at 31 for 4 days. Now on to 29th which we will hit on Oct 26th if every thing holds equal, never know when another power user will jump on board. Sorry poor ol' Mikey's team is far behind now in the plasma trail, jsut a tiny little spec back there (sorry i couldn't refuse the change at poking you). Catch me if you can.

So much to do, so little time. Gotta run....

Do you do video capure 24 hours a day ?
-
You can set in your cc_config.xml to suspend gpu when a particular program runs. This way when you shut down the video capture, then the gpu could crunch giving you a little more than a little boost. Might not be enough to cath me up, but it is worth a try ;)

If you're interested
in cc_config.xml

add in the section

Replace with you program name. You need to look up the exact name as in windows task manager, case sensative. Good for 6.10.20 and above

examples:
RelicCOH.exe

freecell.exe

Thanks for the info. For the time being I'm going to pass.

Even doing 'mundane' tasks on this 6-core system, when E@H was running gpu tasks my system response went to pot. Just doing a Quicken account update would run forever. I had to suspend the gpu to complete the update. Once I get the capture launch program running properly, I COULD be doing a video capture at any random time period in a 24 hr day.

At this moment I'm doing a video capture, so I'm posting from an alternate system that IS doing gpu crunching. At various times, when I'm typing I can key letters so fast that the video doesn't catch up for a second or even two.

Granted, my video cards are VERY low-end cards, (GT 9400; GT 9500; GT 520) but they still give E@H credit a good boost. However, the system lag in Firefox is painful, and Quicken gets VERY bad.

Running on 6 cores and no gpu and...

One thing you will see is that you can pass me, and my Team now, but later on we could pass you back if/when your Team Members abandon your Team. People switch Teams sometimes for reasons that most of don't know. But CONGRATULATIONS on you and your Teams standings and I wish you luck on your rise towards the top!!

RandyC you have TOO BIG of a Quicken file!!!!!

I am in Brunswick Maine right now and will be thru tonight, then we head off to Bar Harbor Maine for 5 days, then FINALLY back home again! Of course back home again means turning the pc's back on and crunching again, I have already dropped 3 places in the individual over all Boinc standings!

I think i'm going to convert my gpu rigs to liquid kooling. With the help of a teammate I researched this all weekend. Haven't drawn up a final configuration list to order parts, but it is doable. I need to get more heat out of the room and my using liquid at least it does not go into the room. I will put the radiators into a duct susytem like i did for the ones on the cpu's, so more heat directly gets vented out.
-
I also had this duct fan, but it was too noisy. could not find a 12v controller to ahndle the 3A motor. Searched very hard, any controllers were too cheap, handling only 1 amp or less, or very expensive, like one for some work shop tool. While looking at liquid kooler items, i found a motor/fan controller rated to 3Amps. might get it and go find that duct fan again. If I can slow it down some so it does not scream as much that would be great. the thing about it is it is round and built to the same size as the duct hoses I use, so it could fit inline very well, and it can blow or suck very well. It was actually made for boats to be used as a blower to vent hot engine room air full of fumes overboard.
-
Got more work to do on my design, and may actually wait a while, but I need to be converted before next spring.
-
WINNING as I go to sleep again.

My Win7 install CD I ordered Tuesday has arrived. I've actually got it installed and partially configured right now. It's installing MUCH cleaner (so far) than XP Pro has before.

Dual booting between XP and Win7.

Until I get Win7 configured with BOINC and my Video Software I'll run mostly from XP.

And you also have a PM!

I am now WINNING and feeling MUCH better after feeling REALLY bad for the last couple of days! My sinus problems went into my chest and I may have even got a touch of the flu, I spent most of 2 days in bed in a motel room, FUN!!

I am starting for home on Saturday to arrive on Sunday, so that is a good thing!!! I am on the East Coast of Maine and the GPS wants me to go straight down I-95 which is contrary to my way of making good time driving thru all those big cities, NYC, Boston, Philly, Baltimore, DC, etc, is NOT my idea of making good time on the road. I will be splitting off part way down and then getting onto I-81 which goes West of my home instead of East but should give me a more consistent, steady drive home. I like putting the cruise control on and just letting the miles float away behind me. It will add a couple of hours to the trip, according to Google Maps, but the time spent just cruising is worth it to me.

WINNING!!!

Sorry to post this, but my Momma has passed away about an hour and a half ago. She never really got better after getting out of the hospital although she was not in any pain. It was not a total surprise that it happened. She would have been 89 the end of this month. I'm kind of releived that it ended sooner than later, her suffering was really short and she had been in the Hospital from beginning of May til end of August. I did at lesst get to talk to her several times recently.

Sorry to hear the news...unfortunately, not unexpected.

When my mom died in 2009 it was a case of all for the best. She had Alzheimer's and had broken her pelvis a year or so earlier, so she was totally wheelchair bound.

Thank you all.
-
Yeah my mom was wheelchair bound too, only from worn out parts and lack of use. She was sort of that way before it all started, but being mostly in bed in the hospital for 4 months didn't help anything either.

Dad stuck me with the duty of informing my three brothers, which I have finished today. They all will be calling him sometime. We don't have any service planned.

I do need to get my family tree software reinstalleed. I still have it on my old computer, would rather have it on the new with the larger wider screen. Copying the database is no problem once software installed installed and then it automatically updates the family website from there if I remember the passwords.

I have some corrections to make and some new additions.
First my second oldest borhters son, my nephew, has had a baby boy (Jr) back in May. Then my oldest brothers oldest daughter, has just in the laswt two weeks had her third baby. I got an email from her about it and i need to get back into the tree and see what other information needs touching up and any missing items, birthdays, marriage dates and stuff like that. I suppose at some point my intention is to go back and re-reseach the ancesters and see if I can find any more puzzle pieces ?

Gotta go do some work now, today is tree pruning day, and I want to test out my new tool. No more hand saw. I got an electric pole saw. Can extend 10 feet, although anything over about 6 you have to pretty much go straight up, it is a little heavy to hold out 10 feet.

It's kool here now, i need to put long pants on to work outside.

WINNING !!!

Sorry to hear of your news and loss, Keith.

Your mum had a good innings by today's standards, and things are now final.

Best of luck and condolences.

From me too Keith! I am sorry your mom has passed but as you said long term illnesses are no fun either!! Instead of a celebration or burial get together maybe all of you can donate to her favorite cause, she might have liked that.

My mom is still alive, she is in her mid 80'd and hasn't known who I am for 10 years now! She has Dementia, which is sort of like Alhezimers. When we get together she looks at me like 'what the heck are you doing here'! She knows my sister because my sister keeps telling her who she is. I stopped calling her years ago, she has no idea who I am and I want to remember her as my mom, not the lady in her body now! I did call my dad one day and she answered thep hone and I asked for 'dad', she said "who", we went thru that several times until I asked for 'Bob' which is what she calls my dad, and she said "he is in the yard" and then she hung up. My dad said later when I talked to him, he checks the caller id now, that she hangs up on everyone. Keith your mom will be missed! You take care my friend!!!

Thank you so much. I do feel for you with you mum. Mine was only just starting that phase. Dad and I could tell. Once in the hospital dad was trying to help turn her over or something, and she said to dad, go get Craig (my brother) to help, he moved out XX years ago. One phone call with her within the last month i'm sure she thought she was talking to my brother and not me. Another call she asked me where I lived (house/apartment) saying I never told her, like she was thinking when I just moved here, that was 14 years ago.

Some say it will all stop in December next year, some think that is all BS intended to scare people into spending their money on scams. Me I am saving my money and taking my chances, but could end up regretting that if 'they' are right!

Had a tough day at the office today. Soon after I got in, I learned that one of the Mainframe Dept. heads had been killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend. Put a real damper on the whole day.

Had a 'gathering' in the 15th fl Auditorium to lay out what was known and give people a chance to talk. He may not have been a friend to everyone, but he was mostly liked and was respected by everyone. He will be sorely missed. The meeting was not mandatory, and I guess only 90% or so of the 250 seats were taken, but I also saw about 30-40 people standing along the back and side of the auditorium.

Struggling along once again.

Sorry to hear that RandyC, sounds like he tried to do the right thing to everyone he dealt with. Sometimes being fair means people don't like you because you didn't do something special for them, tough nuggies I say. It is work and once you start down that path it never ends!!

Why is it that the podium is empty when I post?

I see Krunchin left his cheese and tomato sandwich, with English mustard, here half eaten. I think he had a touch of gas and had to head for the Thunderbox. So, really the place was empty.

OK?

That wasn't my sandwich, I was eating Peanutbutter, did you see some kracker krumbs ?
But it did give me gas, it was that generic brand, tastes great, cheaper but does have a side effect.

My HDTV has bit the big one I think. About 4 times this year it has just cut off. Last couple required me to unplug it for a minute.
I turned it off earlier today and now it won't come on.

It is a 37in almost 5 years old (2 more months) anyway. I already had searched for something newer, greener and more featured anyway, plus can get a bigger screen. This one has a big border and speakers around it, I think I can get a 42 now without much border taking up the same space, have to go see what I tagged.

[edit]
Make that a 47.
--
Still after being unplugged 10 minutes it would not come on. One last try and I though why not try to wiggle the other input conenctions and sure enough I hit one and poof, it came back on. That may have been all it was, but i'm gonna keep my eye on that 47 incher, going into x-mas, I bet it goes on sale.

Yeah, the ones I looked at by "LG" have all sorts of stuff, internet and wireless. I didn't see the need for the 3D stuff yet. I may wait on this if my old one is still working ok.

I need to convert my heat pumping computers to liquid kooling. I started a plan, haven't prieced parts out yet. But then I got held up with other life events. I may wait until spring to do that anyway. depends. Have to figure costs first and if I can fit all this in my budget, only I don't have a budget. I do like to watch what I spend and not buy a lot all at once.

I'm working on a plan to mount the radiators in the window space directly, so and heat vents directly out. I've also got a plan for a rain shield to help keep rain off the radiators, but still allow heat to vent out. Another feature of this will be, in winter, i could turn 1 or more fans around and blow heat back in. I'll have to see on that. Soon I bneed to redraw my paln and measure some expected hose lengths and make up a parts needed list, then price this project out.

Speaking of saving money. I bought my Christmas stuff early. I buy a lot on amazon and get points on my credit card. I like to save those all year and use them around Christmas for new kitchen gadgets. They jsut had a sale 20% off, so I bought my stuff early, got 20% off and used my points. I paid like 23 dolalrs for a 300+ dollar load of new gadgets, tools and kookware. Most of those points were from my computer overhaul this year.

I still need to get my family tree software installed on my new systems and transfer my datafiles over. I have some changes to make for this year. I still want to get back to research one day and see if I can find any more leaves or branches for the tree.

Now today is some real tree and palnt work. I went and bought 5 big abgs of potting soil. i've got some pots I need to split up. I wanted to do this as I bring them inside for the winter. I've got other plants I want to redo too, they have been in the same soil too long. I use the old stuff as fill and remix it and put newer stuff at the tops, depending on how the roots go, some plants don't have very deep roots. I think over the next month or so i'll redo a lot of plants.

I just woke up but I think I need a nap after just reading what you plan to do! I think LOTS of koffee will be needed for all that stuff! My son is coming up from college today to spread some mulch for me, I just can't do it anymore in a timely manner and we have 10 bags in our driveway. We get it from the local Boy Scouts and 10 bags is the minimum delivery amount. My head is STILL stuffy from my trip so I am back on dayquil and Nyquil too. I had stopped the dayquil for a few days thinking it was okay but apparently not!

I asked my doctor to prescribe some Clariton-D for my sinuses. I sent it off to my mail-order prescription service and they gave me a "3 month supply" = 2/day * 90 days = 180 tablets...enough for the next year or two!

Being obtuse from a recent sleeping spell, I must say that the light winds and sunshine are very distracting to the point I can hardly bear not to take my dogs for a 3 mile ramble in the countryside where I can guarantee not to meet anyone during the time I drive off road then walk in wooded areas for miles meaning I can keep away from mobile phones and no get disturbed by family, friend or co-worker in the great game of life which means I am working my way up to anticipate a decent length of time on the podium ....

Well one of my twins took a dump last night. I might have melted it down with heat output from the i7's below it since last night was not very cool, the a/c is not on and there was no place for them to suck cool air from.

I seem to remember having this happen before, but can't remember how I solved it. It is a weekend project anyway. It starts up fine, windows loads, display looks normal now except the background picture is gone and it is in some recovery mode which doesn't work, all the bloat loads and i get all the icons on the task bar. I have until about the end of that cycle, then it freezes. no mouse, no keybaord, nothing else is running either. I do have a delay on boinc startup, i was able to exit that before the freeze. I'll have to try again and first remove boinc. For the life of me I can't remember which unit did this, if it was boinc or maybe the GPU or a driver.

I don't feel like WINNING today.

Don't worry Keith, you'll find it.

Speaking of HW problems. My new Blu Ray drive I got in Sept for my birthday started acting funky. It took 35 mins to copy a 4 GB DVD to my hard drive. It took 40 mins to burn it back to a blank DVD. No idea what's going on. Some research turned up something called Riplock associated with this model (BH10LS30).

Don't know if I can break it or not.

As an alternative, I reinstalled my old DVD burner. I left the new drive installed, but moved the SATA cable to another port as I wanted to reconfigure what channels they were attached to.

Hook everything back up, power up and...

No video.

Take it apart, reseat the video card, power up and get video...but audio is FUBAR'd.

Fast forward an hour or so later of trouble shooting, both DVDs are uncabled but I've got video and XP running...audio works as well.

Reboot and stop at dual boot screen...cable in the old DVD drive while everything is powered up...SATA is supposed to be 'hot swappable' ya know. Walk through the BIOS screens and save...system boots into XP fine.

Rinse - repeat with Blu Ray drive. Boots into XP fine.

Read a DVD down to the HDD using the old DVD drive...works fast and fine. Burn to it at full speed too.

My first thought was the Video card had gone bad (it's new with this rebuild), but it seems to be working fine now. My second thought was that the extra DVD drive overloaded the PS...maybe.

At this point, I believe that adding a new drive along with moving the SATA connectors is the culprit--too much change at once for the BIOS to handle.

Partially up and...

WINNING!!!

Today I guess i'm a little depressed. This would have been Mom's 89th birthday today. I think i'll be better after today, at least until I go visit Dad in February.

Anywho I decided I had better install my family tree software and copy my database over, last worked on in Feb of 2010. Make some additions. I got that done but the notes are in my email and it has taken me over an hour to clean that out since I haven't read anything in two weeks.

I have to bring some more plants inside. It was 45ish last night. I brought in the tropicals.

I've repotted my Aloe's. At one time the collection grew to about about 27 6inch pots with most having at least 6 plants each, like over 300 total. I'm down to 9 pots, no more than 5 per pot. But some of them have recently started offshoots again, so mabe the collection will rejuvinate. They stay indoors always. I did add a humidifier in the dinning room a few days ago, maybe i'll need another or two. I actually got that as other plants dry out inside in the winter. I'll need one more at least to put in the living room.

I had good luck this year growing some new Alamanda shrubs. The original is about 9/10ths gone and has one branch sticking out 6 feet, now with about 4 leaves on it. But last year I got lots of seed pods. I didn't even use them all ad I got 9 more growing. i think I lost one. They are now 2-3 feet tall. They were all in one pot, so they got split into new potting soil yesterday into 3 medium pots with 1 each and 2 larger pots with 3 each. They went in the living room along with the about 7 year old pineapple plant. Repotted that also.

Need to bring the pepeprs in. those i will not repot as a lot do not survive the winter. it depends, one year a lot did, the next not as many and last year I think only 3. They look pretty for a while anyway. I'll repot any in the sping and start over. i didn't even save seeds this year as i used about 1/12th of the ones I had. I still got about 96 plants out of that and only 10% of the seeds come up.

Need to bring in the sweetpotatoes. that will be a job. i hope i've kept them untangled but some of the vines are 20-30 feet long at at least 6 to 12 per giant tub. Maybe there might be some potatoes in there too. One i know some of them rotted away from too much water but the plants look nice anyway.

back to work, i've got lots I need to do today and I need to stay busy.

I spent til about noon at the computer doing some things.

Then I got to plant moving. To bring 8 pots inside sounds easy. Not so. First I got to check 'em for worrmies, got rid of 2. Have to untanlge them and untie all the ropes and bungee cords. Put down extra carpets inside for them to sit on. After i get them inside I have to arrange them. Then clean up all the unused ropes and stuff and sweep off porch and stairs. Every year I kind of end up with a differnt indoor look, depending on how many plants there will be indoors and how tall they are. So I spent 5 hours on that and still not finished. I need to move the sweetpotato's in. That may happen over the week in the evenings or next weekend.

Oh and I put up a new flag mount made of heavy duty metal, moved my pole to it and put on a new US Flag. I hope it holds up, the wind tends to be harsh on things. When I had one mounted before on those cheap aluminum mounts, the wind beat them pole back and forth in it and within a couple weeks it was broke. I had the pole then stuck between the house and the porch railing, but it was too close and the flag hit the ourdoor light and kept ripping itself apart. Gotta get rid of that wind. It has destroyed one pole, one mount and three flags.

So after all that I took a shower while some left over pizza reheated and as I eat that i'm thinking its time for a knap and some WINNING.

Well my HDTV bit the dust. I thawt I had found a loose connection on the back, but that was not the problem. It has cut off several times since then and wiggling cords does not help. It cut out again. Now with everything unplugged except power it won't come on at all, I even tried a new cord. I moved it around, the light came on once briefly, then nothing.

I want a new LG Infinia 47LV5500 47-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV but need to wait until next week to get one.

no WINNING today.

No.

1. Because you're running the game and hence are not eligible to win
2. If you bought the TV personally in '45 (as opposed to your family having bought it when you were a kid), that would make your age somewhere near 80--85. And everyone knows that someone that old is too blind and nearsighted to watch a screen that small. :-P

The first Televisions were late 1920s, They actually had been under development for some years, but the first ones for sale wern't until about 1926-1927, methinks.

Doomsday Book was earlier than 1200's.

Forth, you are not winning either for thinking wrong, thus I must be WINNING.

Quite rite you know-it-alls.

Anyway, my first colour TV was bought at a car boot sale back around 1840, when I went with my Grandmother's father. It was kute and had a 4" colour display, and, boy, the images were really sharp. The detail was really good, just loake a Van Gogh painting.

Oh the problems of pushing the envelope, how did the gpu burn up? Don't they have their own fans and I KNOW there is airflow, where you oc'ing?

I am getting a new stove today, our old one, electric, is somewhere around 15 to 20 years old, it is a hand me down, and is forgetting to turn the burner on and off to regulate the temperature. It burned a pot of beans because it didn't turn the burner off when it got too hot. Then another burner won't come on after it turns off due to being too hot, in short it is cheaper to replace it then repair it! The new stove is a flat top surface, they say any kind of pan can work on them now except wavy ones, so my old stainless, with copper bottoms, cheap ones should work just fine. The new stove also has a "steam cleaning" feature built in, you just add 2 cups of water inside and in 20 minutes the stove is nice and clean. No more waiting for hours as the kitchen heats up and then smells as it burns the food off.

Looks like we're all going to/have all ready given the economy a shot in the arm. The carpet installers are due here today in another couple of hours: LR + spare bedroom and hallway.

Unfortunately that means dismantling my network and going off the air 'til they're done. Only the PC in the back room will stay running, but no network access.

Shutting down for much needed carpet replacement and...

Old age. They are 8800GT that had been run 24/7 x 3 years, Since Aug 2008. Very few days off.

Actually I haven't tested them yet in another system, but neither work in the systems they are/were in, the twins. Both the Twisn are still running cpu and one old ATI 5450 PCI. It might be that the 8800GT burtn up, but it might also be the PCIe slot. Strange though, when one burtn up, the other in the other twin was working, but it went about a week later. These were actually an older style 8800GT when I bought them.

One more thing on the todo list.

I had to abort some unfinished work on them.

---

Brrr. A wicked wind out of the northish somewhere, its 40F'ish here.

I had to untangle the SweetPotato vines. Fortuantely I kept them pretty straigh and there was not too many wrapped around something this year. Now at the moment they are laying in the living and dining room. I broke a couple. Oh well more plants, just stick them in some dirt, they'll re-root and go on. I'll figure out waht to do with them later as I warm up some.

Sipping on some new Kahlua, Cinnamon Spice, now. Jsut perfect for a coldish winter day.

Later I go unsort the vines and figure out where to place them. To bring them in they get wound up like coils of rope, gently of course. They are somewhat flexible, but no sharp bending allowed. What i do is leave the pots on the floor, run the vines up to the window and wrap them around the edges. A small bungee cord hooked onto the blind at the top works well and I can loop the vines through that. One of the giant tubs has 6 long vines, I bet one would reach from the pot back here to the bedroom.

I have to dig for potatoes too. Maybe there is a surprise in there.

Later too I want to draw out my plan for the liquid cooling system on the i7's cpu and gpu's, make a parts list and figure how much this is going to cost me.

Plus I need to go shopping for a new HDTV, One of the newest types, LED, with internet apps. [Drool]

Oh yeah, and after a month of poor internet sales, I got 7 orders last night, between 5pm and midnight I guess. It was expected for my sales to drop this time of year, October I thought would be 50% of average, It actaully did a little better at 57%. I think as of yesterday before the 7 more orders, Novemeber was already up to 12%. I'll log in remotely and enter those into my system so i'll be ready Monday moring, it will make it easier on me to not have to do that step with so many. Then if I get any more today or tomorrow i'll enter those too.

plenty to keep busy this weekend, I wonder if there is room for WINNING !

Winning after an early start (for me) on a Sunday

Here in the US we changed our clocks back last night, so we got an extra hour of sleep. Basically it means we will get up before the sun does and then those that work will come home after the sun goes down!

Keith I am sorry about your cards, I hope old age is not a card killer! I too have some that have been going for awhile now!! My two cards at PG are both Nvidia cards and together put out about 100k per day of rac, but are both my oldest two still running!

It is 35F right now and it is almost 7am, I took down my tomato plants a couple of weekends ago but my hot pepper plants are still going. I could bring it in but don't know if I will or not, before I do I would have to get something to go under it so I don't over water it and flood the carpet. I have that UV film in my windows and doors so it might not work anyway, more research is needed I guess.

I am getting ready to go to breakfast with the neighbors, we do it every other weekend and we switch places every time. This time we are going to the Silver Diner, last time it was Cracker Barrel, time before Waffle House, etc, etc.

WINNING!!!

Winning after an early start (for me) on a Sunday

Here in the US we changed our clocks back last night, so we got an extra hour of sleep. Basically it means we will get up before the sun does and then those that work will come home after the sun goes down!

Speak for yourself. I woke up thinking i had slept an extra hour, only to find out my "digital" klock needed to be turned back. I actually woke up around the same time I normally do. I guess my internal kronometer is more accurate than most beings. The komputers and smartphone are self adjusting, I only have to change the microwave klocks.

Well I should be the firt to know since i was one of the 1st alpha testers at GPUgrid, the pioneer project of all the GPU stuff.

My first card was an 8800GT overclocked model to 640MHZ. That one was in use in my main system, which when that system broke became what is not my 5th element in the stack. Only recently did I upgrade it to a GTX460 so that 8800 became a spare. It might last longer because the overclock models are the ones with the best made chips.

The other two were added later, but were actually an older design of the same card but at stock speeds of 600MHz (and budget priced). The 640 had a slightly different design, maybe even a smaller die.

In theory graphics cards should last longer, except "we" run then 24/7 at full power which is not really the best thing for them, thus shortening life cycle.

I'm still presuming they are dead. It could be the PCIe controller chip on both mobo's went bad. Probally not but until I try some real diagnostics I don't know for sure. I have the 640 I can stick in to test the systems. At the moment I don't have a spare test computer. i could use the 5th to test the two gpus, one at a time. I'm not sure if I even have anything at work I could use at the moment.

Yeah, you definately want extra under them. I have old rugs to put down, some newer ones, those smaller decrative rugs or runner rugs. Some plants get a second larger plastic base under the palstic base, which reminds me I net to go get a set of 8 for the peppers since I did them differently thsi year, they are on an old rug, but a second base would not be bad. Bases are not that expensive. Some of my extra rugs are machine washable and have rubber undersides, so most of the plants I try to get on them. I do have some older rugs I had to cut parts off where some plant constantly wet the floor, unnoticed by me, and it rotted through the carpet, as in a big hole. Fortuanately it did not rot through the in house carpet and I was able to clean the black mold stuff out, with about 6 applications of carpet cleaner, scrubbing and vacumming.

Now i've got to go finish arranging a sweet potato plant. i did two of the six vines yesterday, filling one window. The others go in the second window. Then the other plant will go in another window but has shorter vines. Plus i've got a bunch of broke off pieces to plant. At least the sun is out today, yesterday it was overcast all day and very windy outside. At least today i can see if i have a good arrangement and plants get some sun. Some will get more say from 8 til 2pm, other only get a couple of hours. Some get a little in the morning, less than an hour, but then 2 hours at the end of the day.

I added two moisturizes this year. I want to try to see if that helps them. I nthe winter indoors they dry up. Most of the leaves are gone, although some of the stalkes live through the winter, soem do not. i'm hoping the moisture may make them last longer. The can put out 2.3 gallons a day of vapor, but only have a 1 gallon tank. I'm not going to fill them taht often. i have them turned back at the moment, it takes 3 days to empty the 1 gallon.

Off to some arranging now. I do a little, go off and do something else, watch some streaming video, then go back and do some more. Better get started now.

Orders flood in. i'm up to 9 now. Even rarer is to get an order for more than 1 item, or even multiple quantities. of those 9, 3 are for 2 items and one of those is has 2 of 1 item. 1 more order is for quantity 3. So that make 4 orders for more than 1, Very rare occurance. I think the record is 12 or 14 orders for a weekend, so there is still time to break the record.

I'm WINNING with thatrecord !!!

I want a new LG Infinia 47LV5500 47-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV but need to wait until next week to get one.

Keith I bought a 120hz tv and am sorry I did! It IS very nice but the sound gets messed up and the tv 'stutters' and then the sound goes out on a regular basis! I have another tv, same Vizio brand but a different size and only 60hz, and it does NOT stutter EVER! I did some research on tv stuttering and Vizio and they say I have to go into a 'secret' Verizon Fios menu but my remote doesn't have the buttons needed to get into it! I can't figure out now how to chose 60hz instead, I remember in the VERY begninning I chose 120hz over 60hz, so I am stuck with it as it is!! In short I would NOT chose 120hz again. I will ask my neighbor if his tv stutters, he has a different brand tv and also got 120hz and has Verizon Fios too. Mine stutters on ALL channels, not just the hd or non hd ones. It will go along just fine for an hour, or any amount of time, and then start stuttering and then shut the sound off. Sometimes it will stutter as soon as I switch to the channel, it is frustrating!!!! If I pause the channel, I have a dvr on both tv's, and then click play it stops stuttering and then might not stutter for the rest of the night until I switch channels. It is like the sound can't keep up with the picture, the picture is uneffected. I AM using the tv speakers, not external ones.

WINNING mostly!

Maybe.

I also read bad reviews on the vizio, one person quoted it was a known defect that that brand has "Input Lag".

With digital content streamed, the audio and video are different packets, and has to be recombined once recieved. I guess yours has a stone-age processor in it.

I don't haave fios.

I ordered another brand this morning, might be here next week. Good because i'm tired of sleeping on the floor by/under my desk so I can see the LED computer monitor.

I'll be going from 37" to 47". It will fit the same hole with room to spare. I could have gone 52" but it would be about 1" wider and taller than the hole, it would fit in front of it but I thought i did not need that much and it would not look great hiding part of the cubbyholes on the side and shelf above.

Of the reviews I read for LG, most were pretty good. I ddid not see problems noted like on the vizio reviews I read. I don't give those that much attention anyway, as some people liek to complain about the smallest thing and the reviews sometimes often leave out important information to make a good decision based on it.

Not the greatest week coming up for me. Thursday I get to go back to the Dentist and have the Temporary crown replaced with the permanent one...IF it comes in from the lab by then.

When I had the carpet replaced Saturday, we had moved all the excess JUNK into the sewing room to clear space for the new carpet. Now it's time to sort through all that stuff, decide what needs to be kept, donated, recycled or trashed. I'm seeing a lot of paperwork that needs to be shredded...hope the shredder doesn't fall to bits on me.

BTW, anybody need a bunch of used (reformatted) 3.5" floppy disks? Probably got 2-3 dozen laying around nowadays.

@Mikey

Are you stating that some web sites show there are 138 Mikeys in the Final Front Ear team?

You are second in the team, and, with your current daily output, I estimate you should be number one by August next year.

Good going, a great acheivement.

I will pass 300 M in a kouple of days.

Waiting for big tv, it left Indianapolis yesterday. Delivery says Monday the 14th. They sent it by some odd delivery company, which means I probably will have to take time off work to drive howm, wait for it and sign for it. Monday is not the best day for me to do that. I bought one of the open-box units, but not the cheapest one, but still it was about 200 bucks off a new new one.

Next project is to start liquifing my komputers. They put out to much heat and even now i need the a/c on. trying to blow kool air in from outside and suck heat out is not working well. I plan to start off a test of one gpu. I need to buy some parts, convert the gpu, assemble the flow loop and test it outside the system for NO leaks. I want to see how one works first and how much is involved in building jsut one. i also want to see some of the parts in hand first, before i commit to doing all 5. This will be a big expense. I may after that in the future add cpu's and memory to the liquid loops.

The thing I paln to do different than other people, is the venting of heat. Right now i have the sort of working exhaust vent. I can open the window and stick my hand by the outside, and there is some heat pooring out of that. But the problem is the intakes, don't capture all the heat blowing out of the gpus. But i do have the two i7 cpus on a liquid kooler already. the radiator of those is pumped into the exhaust vent system and from those there is no heat escape since the radiaotr is 5x5 inches and the intake boxesa are 5x5x inches, they fit together well. this is what i will do with the gpus, each gpus will ahve its own radiator and heat exhast box, but all the heat exhaust boxes will be chained together, with one exhaust port. I plan to add one other fan into the duct to suck heat along and blow it out the exhaust port. I think i can do all this and do it in a way that is not very ugly, also moving the boxes to the otherside of the stack, thus getting boxes and radiators out of the cable connection area. If I do all this the untis will run kooler and there will be no heat going into the room (except in winter when it is wanted), thus less a/c needed overall, lower electric bill. It will alos reduce noise levels as the fans on the gpus get removed. There is a fan on the radiator, but those will be blowing into the box, the noise goes into the box too. I already have extra fans on the gpus which will transfer to that use.

Gotta go shopping now and get some boxes on my way to w&*k. My first experiment will be with getting a few of thsoe and assembling them together. I think I can do it with jsut duct tape. They are white and if I use white tape, it blends in. The I need to see if I can attach them on the other side.

Nope it is stating that I am #138 in the WHOLE WORLD of Boinc, almost 2.3 MILLION people!!!

RandyC my teeth hurt just thinking about your visit, GOOD LUCK!!!

Keith did they give you a good return policy? Make sure you test it out well before it runs out. I also think the box stuff might work if you can get them small enough to provide a good air flow without restricting it. Too big of a tube and the air just kinda loses what it is trying to do and just kinda spins around. Think race cars and how they manage their airflow!

Yeah, if it's anything like the insert he did a couple of years ago, all he will do is pop off the temporary and click on the permanent crown (with a bit of surgical glue of course). The day he did the work to put the temporary crown on, he was drilling and drilling and...you get the picture--not fun!

What I really hate (since he gave me anesthetic and I didn't feel much of anything) is that goopy stuff in the little tray they slather all over over your teeth and gums to get an impression. All the time that stuff was in there I felt like I had to puke it out.

Feeling better now and...

The ones I have now work good. It is dryer vent box and hose, 4" diameter. Easy to work with flexible hose. The box is good up to 250F, If my gpu's put out that much, i'm in trouble.

The new build will add an extra more powerfull fan. then fans on all the radiators will force air into the duct system, the powerful fan will insure it flows toward the out vent at racing speeds.

Each box, think of a 5" cube with two holes, one top and bottom and a place to attach 4" hose at the holes, has a removable screen. Take screen off. Then there is a little ledge to sit the radiator on which is 5x5 inches. I'll figure out how to hold it in later. the 120mm fan, 5"x5" fits on the radiator and blows KOOL air through it and hot air out the other side, which will be in the box now. There is a diverter. Normally this either lets heat out or blocks the screen so the heat goes straight through the hose to outside. I'm using them in reverse, so this diverter flap i tape so it is at about 45 degrees. it forces the hot air from the radiator fan toward the exhaust direction, helps air flow as each fan box will be forcing air in one direction. Now take a second box and tape it to the first and a third and tape it to the second. The to pactuially removes, so when stacking then, the bottom hole from one is inside the other. Custome made vent tube. Each lets a raditoar add hot air into this new square duct tube, while also letting hot air from the one above flow though. When i'm done there will be 6 in a row for the i7 gpus. I'll need 1 extra for each cpu but not sure how i'm going to atap those in. then each twin will have one or two. If I can position one next to the cpu it may help suck cpu heat in.Any gaps between systems will have hose between the boxes. At the top of the stack i'm thinking of putting an entire vent fan like in your bathroom. this will suck in excess extra HEAT and provide air flow down through the vent boxes all stuck together. at the bottom there will be one box for unit 5's gpu. then from there will be a hose that loops under the stack and up to the window output hole. Now i do have anyter 4" round fan for a boat. By conincident it fits exactly in line with the 4" hoses, and is round too. It makes too much nosie but I think i found a fan controller that will handle it, if I can slow it down some it may work for me and I can put this at the bottom to suck air from all the boxes and ensure it blows out the exhaust port in the window. If I use that I may not put the other fan at the top. For the i7 cpus I may have to jsut make them on a separate line and somehow combine the two lines together at the bottom. some scissors and duct tape sould work in custom builing a Y duct out of hose. The boxes are not too expensive 10 bucks each and hose is 9 bucks for 8 feet. They even have spring clamps to hold the hose on, i got those as it is easy to remove then and take the system apart. So in the winter all i have to do is undo the final hose at the bottom and the heat stays inside. Maybe i'll add one alst box and use it as an actual diverter so i can contol how much heat stays in, sumemr time it all goes out, spring and fall a little comes in and winter it all comes in. I can do like i'm doing now, the boxes can be held on to the stack with bungee cords.

I think what I have now works ok, but the box by the three gpus just does not suck in enough heat as I cant have it exactly against the gpu exhaust vents because of video cables. some heat escapes, well a lot and i think more than goes in. the ones on the cpu radiaters are sealed with duct tape, so they put 100% into the exhaust hose. changing all the gpus to liquid cooling will allow all the gpu heat to also go directly into this new exhauist vent duct. the gpus will run kooler and also quieter. there will be some nosie from the fans on the radiators, but too not as much and the noise is directed into the duct, so any heard will be muffled some. The 120's are a lot quieter than gpu fans. also the intake side is quieter than the output side and i'll be sitting on the intake side. Kooler running gpus last longer and have less math errors, maybe too i can overclokc some of them for higher output and benefit to the projects.

i decided on a configuration that will require 1 pump for each computer. more expensive but if one ps shopuld go out or a breaker trip (i'm on three circuits with the 5 computers) then the others won't have a coolant flow stoppage.

Also too the liquid tubes will look kool in the fanlight at night.

I think in the long run i'll be better off.

I want to order some parts soon, at least enough for one system. So i can test assemble some and see how they will look, sort of, in place. make sure i can fit everything in without problems. I can imagine a lot in my head, but until you get the actual items it is soemtimes not all that easy. Before i shut one down for dissassembly i want o be sure there are no surprise and i have everything on hand. don't want o have it turned off for a week while i wait for the last gizmo to show up because something didn't fit.

Well off to dreamland now, is it WINNING time yet ???

I have two crowns now and one tooth that there is not enough tooth left to put a crown on, so it has just a slab of filling stuff on it. Both my crowns are on molars but the one that doesn't work is a canine tooth. I prefer to NOT get the shot of numbing stuff as I am not numb until I am halfway home anyway. I let the dentist give me several shots for my last crown but she had to wait for almost an hour for me to be numb. It has never worked for me so no that I am old enough to enforce my decisions I tell them "no shots"! There ARE twinges of pain but nothing unbearable for the most part, the dentist watches me and when she gets to a rough patch tells me first. Then if I am griping the chair too tightly she backs off for a second, then goes back at it again. I don't like that goopy stuff either!!

Keith I think that setup will work as long as you keep positive airflow thru the vents at all times. Lots of large flow tubing though so be careful to check for airflow out the end.

Thank you EVERYONE for their nice comments about my crunching. Now it is onward and upward time, to quote Buzz Lightyear "to infinity and beyond"!

What an awful day.

First I was up til 2 or 3am. I was not tired really and working on some notes. Finally realized it was late late late.

Then I awoke early and my eyes were burining and a cramp in my neck.

So I was at the computer and noticed one gpu with no activity. Now somehow I started looking at the dispaly setting and screensaver. making a normal minor change, things went wrong. the screen went black except for a mouse pointer that I culd move around. clicking did nothing. Finally I found alt-tab brought up open windows, but no background. clicking on the black hid the window again. Then I found alt-tab I could get to the background, but no windows on the abckground and a click made it go away. it was like the normal view is now split into 3 separate pains. I could not figure this out, so I finished the windows update and let it reboot. OOPS. now windows starts to the black screen with no way to get to explorer view. So I begin to panic. Looking at the clock I decided I was late for work and kept on working on this problem. Finally I got to task manager by alt-ctrl-del and was able to susspend a suspected recently added option, get to control panel and uninstall and kill explorer and restart it and got the background and task bar back. Then i realized i read the clock wrong and still had time before work. My brain was as disconnected as windows. It was just a lucky guess on the conflict. When i get home i have some more chekcing to do on the problem and probally uninstall same program on other i7. It was some mobo utility for power management. I spent two hours this morning working on that and rebooting, rrebooting, rebooting all the time while my eyes burned and neck hurt.

So I get to work with 10 minutes to spare only to find out no one else here. Boss was late getting a tire fixed and the other tow guys were givin the day off, and no one told me.

HOPEFULLY today will be better!!!! Don't you do backups of your pc's? I KNOW you do, couldn't you have just restored it back a few days and been okay again IF you hadn't found the problem so quickly?

Yesterday the heating and a/c guy came by and I am biting the bullet and buying a new inside and outside unit. My current unit is at least 15 years old and is not very good at heating or a/c! The State also has a $1500 rebate going on right now and the Feds have a $300 tax break too. That doesn't do much to a $10k system but I should FINALLY be able to be comfortable in my own home this winter! I am thinking of getting some gas logs for my fireplace too. My wife will NOT put wood in it so it is just a hole in the wall right now. I have a REAL brick fireplace that used to have a wood stove insert but again no wood going in by the wife. She said she won't do pellets either, so gas logs are the only option!

Well actually yesterday got better. Something good came out of all the bad.

When i got home i needed to finish banishing the bad software and cleaning up. While waiting for something on #1 I was rebooting #2 and decidedto look into rom settings. I have not made any changes in there since building these, leaving everything factory set. poking around i looked at all the energy saving or overclocking voltages. All these wer set to "Auto" so I decided to try setting all to "Normal" to avoid any saving or overcolock modes.

I then found one other item, the PCIE Frequency was set to 95MHZ and it said 100MHz was the "Standard". I thought that was odd. So I changed it. Rebooted. The getting into boinc turned GPUgrid back to allow work. On #2 this only produced errors all within 12 seconds of start. it got 4 tasks and started running 2, which made it past 12 seconds. That alone was a record. Later it finsished those and running more.

I made the same settings in rom to #1, but found the PCIE Frequency was set at auto. i changed it too to 100MHz and all the other voltage setting to Normal. It in the past had maybe completed 1 out of 12 GPUgrid but it too many failures and was on restricted duty so it got no new work. I ahd to wait a while but by bedtime it had got 2 and the had been ruinning 20 minutes. Another record.

By this morning #2 has completed 5 tasks and running 2 more. #1 had completed 2 and got 2 more. This is a record for succesful non-error runs on these.

So the disaster related to energy savings had a good side effect. So yesterday got better and this mornng is looking good too.

This may also have been the source of the BSOD and instant mystery reboots all this time these past 6 months.

Yes I got lots of good slepp last night. I'm definately WINNING today.

Interesting situation has popped-up with my Best Buy Rewards account. Seems B-B thinks that I bought a digital camera back in September. They credited my Rewards account with 1280 points (pretty expensive camera!) and I got a $25 bonus coupon to spend there. Trouble is...I didn't buy the camera, and no body who might have credited points to my account (e.g. daughters' S.O.'s) admits to doing so.

I've checked my credit account with them and nothing's been charged to it. Funny thing is...today I got a letter offering Geek Squad Black Tie protection plan on the camera. Only $99.99 for one year/$179.99 for two years. Wow what a deal![/sarcasm]

I'm not sure if I should contact them and tell them they're out of their minds (and risk losing the $25 certificate) or just forget about it.

Puzzled, but...

Happens all the time with them...I used to work there and when the card doesn't work the cashier types in the numbers manually, when they make a mistake someone else gets the points. There is NO WAY for them to know who it really was, it was hand entered mistakenly. My suggestion is if you shop there keep the money and enjoy it, they will get it back another way!! Oh and ignore the protection, it is usually not worth it except to them, Best Buy gets 40% of the money and the insurance/repair company gets the rest!

WINNING....while waiting for the Formula One 2nd free practice session to begin at 8am my time in Abu Dabi, it is now 6:45am my time.

Well that was a nice try.
WINNING!!!

Did you check the spelling....

Anyway, I built a 3 stage vent box last night. As a test build. had some problems but now know how to build when i make the final one. they jsut a bout fit beside one computer cubical, so i'm going to have to build 6 together for the i7s starting at the bottom and working up. i only need one top and that is already made. had to cut some plastic, hard plastic out to fit a fan in, well it was more like shave it out a little at a time, my hand hurts from pushing on the end of the exacto tool.

So anyway i built this 3 box, one fan in the top to keep arflow in one direction and 3 fans, one per box as intakes. I stuck it in palce of the one fan box on one i7. becane hooking up ower to the fans, first the top. I got some air flow out the bottom and a little heat. started the first intake fan. lots of heat and more air flow, more than i think was in the pipeline. By the time i got the tird an going it was blowing out more heat than a hair dryer but not quite as much as a jet engine and definately not as nosiy. So i re accached the intake hose at the top which comes from the exhaust on the cpu venting and the hose at the bottom which is to the next box down and the exhaust. Temp in her dropped about 4 degrees.

Don't worry Mikey, jsut with those three fans in a row, there was ample air flow. By the time i get six in a row it will be rather powerful. I still paln to have a few other inline fans, but i can now do that with just 120mm 2000RPM fans. I can't tell how noisy it is as the gpus make too much noise. I think it is rather quiet, the fans are normally 31dBa but they are 1/2 inside a box, so the nosie goes inside the box with the exhaust.

In the ned when i finish this, it will also be pulling air in from the computer area, so other minor heat that radiates from on board chips, will be drawn toward the radiator fans, so it serves a dual prupose to keep other heat build up down.

I beleive it is going to work rather good whe ndone, and once i get the liquid kooling in place, working on that design now, allmsot al lthe heat is going to into this vent system. But for winter time i will have an escape port to let heat, soem or all, back into the room.

I was thinking if I owned my own home, i would run the exhaust hose up into the ceiling and tap into the air duct, not as powerful as the blower, but that would let heat migrate towards other rooms, it has to go somewhere.

Now for the bad news. Just to outfir the gpu's with waterblocks, hose, radiators, and the all-in-one pump/controller/reservoir plus various fittings, not counting fans which i already have is

well for a single gpu system it is about 600 bucks and 1300 bucks for the tri-gpu systems, each.

I'm not doing cpu's yet. Since the i7 cpu's already have a sealed independant system, i'm gonna keep those for now, maybe in the future i'll replace and add to the new system. The single computers have only P4-HT cpu's and i don't plan on using the cpu on those as much. I'll see how much heat/noise i can cut down first with jsut gpu's. I laos need to buy two new gpu's and maybe a third as a repalcement in the last system and a new larger psu.

When i'm done then i will need to find a way to liquid kool my kredit kard.

Finally too the "warp core" will have a futuristic look, more like a warp ocre with lots of lights and glowing tubes. Also that is a pun if you didn't get it, yes it is a reference to star trek, but also there is dual core, quad core, .... and warp core.

GOOD GRIEF!!!! That is alot of money to spend on cooling, I hope the cobblestones come out the other end really really well!!!

I thought I spent alot of money when I just upgraded 4 machines to 4 gig of ram from their old 2 gig, it was 40 bucks per machine. All machines that can be are now upgraded to 4 gig, some just can't go there as the motherboards are just too old.

It's a giant kobblestone konverter, electricity goes in one end, swirls around and kobblestones fly out the other end, too bad they are so small i can't see them. I just watch the RAC-o-meter kount them.

I do get to watch the radioactive blue liquid flow through the tubes, only you can't see it move really, except for the impeller in the flow meter spinning. No air bubbles wanted. Would be kool if you could mix two liquids, but to the point where they do not blend together, like oil and water, so you could see swirls/drops of both flowing along.

Get this, the place I decided to buy from, is in Florida, about 5 miles from Dad's house. I'll give thme a vist this winter vacation. So I only did the order for two i7's so far. I was working on my parts list and filling my shopping cart, before i did checkout I checked email for some reason and found a 10% OFF entire order coupon. Saved 253 bucks. I'd rather put the money into the hardware than into a/c for the electric company. In the long run, they should use less pwoer, remain kooler and produce more cobblestones. I hope my electric bill will not be as high next summer.

Adter I build these and get everything working again, i'll think about doing the three smaller systems and some new gpu's for them.

---

Now for breakfast. i tried out my new Kalphalon flat grill pan. Kooked two pieces of sausage and no grease came off them to speak of. moved them aside and added three eggs. Was able to flip them over easily. When done I had three white eggs !!, not all brown from butter or grease ! Could have cleaned the pan with a paper towel. Love my Kalphalon. By the way this was won I bought with my points from kredit kard, so it was free. Another benefit from the komputer refit this year. I use my point to buy kitchen stugg at the end of the year.

no winning here.

My HDTV is somewhere, but not here. The carrier amazon shipped it with does not deliver here, so they gave it to someone else. They were suppose to contact me to arrange delivery, i never hear from them or the someone else. Now wiating for a call back if they can find it. What killss me is it took 2 days for the tv to get from indianapolis to norfolk which is 100 miles from me, yet in 7 days someone can't drive 100 miles and get here. The first company should have called and told me this, not jsut wait for me to get mad and call them. They have very poor service, and i told them so and filed a bad report with amazon.

Also our outside air blower thingy makes a lot of nosie. I finally got the rental company to come out after 3 months and look at it and they decided, yes something was wrong. It now makes a lot of noise and is keeping my roommate awake at night, since that thing is right on the other side of the wall from his bed. So then the rental company has to get approval from landlord to send a real repairman here, so now i'm sitting here waiting for a call when they can come.

I had similar experience, except with Walmart in-store pickup. Tracking showed that the item (a 3-wheel bike for my wife) was in Jackson, MI at a warehouse distribution hub. Now Jackson, MI is about 50 mi (70 mi max) from the local Walmart store. It took TEN DAYS to get it transferred from the distribution center to the local store.

I could have ASSEMBLED the bike, got on it and PEDALED it to the local Walmart faster than they trucked it there.

Needless to say, I will NEVER use Walmart in-store pickup again.

Oh it get's worse.

I called the first companys corporate office this morning. They said they would check on it and call me back, could they have my name and phone number. I said what, that is suppsoe to be on the shipping information. [keys heard in background] oh yeah it is here. She was too lazy to punch a couple of keys I guess. I never heard from thier local office. The second company called me today for the first time. They had the TV since yesterday at least. They will delivery it next monday. So now it will be taking 12 days to travel 100 miles. I could have rode Randy's bike there, with my bad knee's, put wheels on it and tow in home in less time. When they asked about stiars and the inside delivery, I told them, no, you are delivering it to my driveway, no further help is wanted. In other words, deliver it, then go away as fast as you can. After that the lasy from the first companies corporate office called me back. I politely told her I heard from the other company already and thank you and that was the end of the conversation.

-

So I waited for the a/c person to call, she was suppose to call at 8am and tell me when the appointment was. She did not. About 10 min til 9 I called her. Oh, she forgot. So i told them to call me when they could come and i would go to work instead of continuing to wait. So now i'm backlogged on stuff to due by the time i get there. About noon I got a call the guy was on the way to my house. So i rushed home. Think the heat/a-c outside unit is fixed. The guy changed the relay thingy. it does not make any loud buzzing noises and also when the inside unit tells it to cuty off, it cuts off and does not sound like a freight train wreck. Will have to test it a few days to be sure.

If you think living at the beach is all fun, it is NOT !!!

I hate to say this Keith but you are totally forgetting about the summer time views when you say that last part!!! Yes the beach has some disadvantages but for us guys they are TOTALLY outweighed by the summer time bikinis!!! I live in a neighborhood, of 1200 homes, about 30 miles South of Wash DC and when it snows we can be stuck at home for DAYS!! People actually park their cars in the middle of the freeway because they are too scared to drive any further and then they get out and walk somewhere! And they do NOT park in any kind of order, they just put the car in park and walk away wherever they are, no order just total randomness! I think everywhere has 'issues' with some things, but some areas, LIKE THE BEACH, has advantages that outweigh those 'issues' sometimes!!!

WINNING while thinking of summertime at the beach and bikinis, LOTS of bikinis!!!
ps it is supposed to SNOW here at my house today, flurries but still SNOW!!!

Bad Mikey! You said the "S" word. Now you've gone and ruined it for all of us; esp. me and swiftmallard!

As it is, I purchased a S-blower end of last winter. I haven't even unpacked it yet...still in the original box. Now that Mikey's let the white stuff out of the bag, I better get it assembled and ready to run.

WINNING!!!

See I LIKE the white stuff, I just HATE to shovel it!!! I did use my electric s-shovel last year and it is okay, MUCH better than hand shoveling!!! Mine was deeper than the shovel is tall and I had to hold it up to get it down to the level where the s-shovel could do it, then I had to push it in and out of the s to throw it out of the way.

RandyC and Swift Mallard I am sorry if you guys get more S after I used the S word, but you could move down by me, houses are cheap and there are plenty available!

My wife got an upgrade from Verizon on her phone and she got an I-phone, all her photo buddies have them and can help her. I was not eligible for an upgrade so was stuck with a regular phone, but Verizon did say if I got my own they would only charge me the 30 bucks a month for the data plan. So I told a friend I was looking on Ebay but that they were too expensive and he offered to GIVE me his old smart phone!!! I now have a Droid2 Global by Motorola smart phone!! I spent 3 hours last night setting it up and am pretty happy with it, it was FREE after all! It has both a slide out and an on screen keyboard, it works just fine on my home network and I found ALOT of free apps. The FIRST one I installed was AVG Anti-Virus though!!! It checks your apps and phone for bad stuff, YES Droid smart phones NEED an anti-virus!!

DEFINITELY WINNING!!!

We used to have those at work, with the chemicals we used to pick up driving around the roads they ate right thru the system, some of ours were electric and some were hot water and both the wires and the pipes got damaged! We ended up shoveling anyway!

I was thinking that the snow and ice that melts would then flow into the street and sidewalks creating a real nice ice slick just where you need to most traction.

When I drive into work each morning, I pass by this fast food joint that does a similar service for everyone that drives by. They still run their AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER system! Needless to say, some of the spray drifts into the street, and what doesn't, runs off into the gutters and overflows into the street and freezes. I'm just waiting for their pipes to burst or a water main to go out!

Winning without thoughts of ice and snow

WINNING with thoughts of ice, that is ice in my drink as it is past drink-o-thirty. Let me finish off this koffee first. While i'm waiting for a komputer to kool down. Need to get my fingers in there and do some rearranging for the upcoming liquid kooling system. Hey, I wonder if Southern Komfort makes a good koolant, well it melts ice rater kwickly when ever I make a mixed drink, it should disapate heat fairly well, but it doesn't come in blue, so i'll stick with cheaper gelco koolant.

Oops i wrote that 7 hours ago, forgot to push send.

I did a rebuild on i7#2 today. Swapped the psu and hdd stachs, rerouted cables. made a post to hold the gpus firm and in the correct place. Biggest thing was moving the radiator on the cpu cooler from one side to the other, i had to undo the pump block from the cpu only to discover that only 1/8th the thermal pastee was making contact. I scraped the pre-installed stuff over and redid it with artic silver. got it reseted very firmly and i'm sure it is making more contact, as I got the cpu tmep to drop from 91C to 54C. I only figured out a week ago they were running that hot. A shorter time rebuild is scheduled for i7#1 tomorrow.

For now i'm beat, hot and tired, so that ICY drink feels really good now.

Looks like Black Friday starts early this year...at least at Best Buy. They have a 4-day pre-Black Friday sale going on. I picked up two Dynex Blu Ray players for $49.99 each. This model is WiFi enabled, although it also has an Ethernet port as well. In addition to a dedicated button for Netflix, the remote has a button for something called CinemaNow. Never heard of it... Also found a 6' HDMI cable on sale for $9.99; an almost unheard of price.

Not a problem...the trucks all have air operated chains now! Got them a few years before I left, they are on a spyder that swings down and touches the tire, spinning it, and then the tire runs over the spinning chains. The chains spin flat or parallel to the road giving the truck constant contact with the chain as it drives along. Then when you get to a part where you don't need the chains you just flip the switch and up and out of the way they swing. Really cool and it works really well. Most places leave the chains on year round now since they are up and out of the way. I was sliding off a bridge one year, activated the chains and stopped just short of going off, they really do dig in!!

RandyC I saw at Newegg an AMD 5870 gpu for 170 bucks, I almost got that, but it is expired now!

WINNING!!!

ps I JUST saw this....a 5870 for $150.00!!!

finally got my LG HDTV.

47 Inches Wiiiide, 1 Inch thin.

Not very heavy, at least compared to other huge TVs. Got it assembled, 8 screws to put base together and on TV.

Then I plugged all cables in before positiong it, so I know what fits where. Then removbed them, put TV in place but at an angle so ican reach behind it. Started plugging in cables. Was able to jack in my Computer to HDMI, The Blue Ray palyer to HDMI and still 2 HDMI ports left. I also put my two old LAser disc palyers to the AV1 and AV2. Old TV I had to unplug one to plug the other in. Time to test them out and see if they still work. Got wireless hooked up and connected. I may buy another long HDMI cable and jack the other i7 into it, that way at least I have the option to watch video from either one.

I complained to amazon about the poor handling by the delivery companies, lack of communication and delay in getting it here. All I wanted them to know was iwas unhappy and they need to try to improcve on that. They gave me a refund on my shipping charges, which is odd since it was free shipping, but they gave me $38 back. If this unit has a cosmetic blemish, it must be on the inside as I don't see one, everything is there, it is working. I got like 150 bucks off anyway for that. I think i'm happy now.

I can at least move back to my bed, get off the floor and be able to see the screen. Watching the computer LCD is fine if your clsoe, but laying on the floor looking at it from about 56 feet away, it is not the best and the focus fades at that angle. People had funny facial colors.

Next I've got to unpack this huge box of Liquid Kooling parts. Enough to build mny two systems which will be this looooooong week-ends project. I planned this in advance.

But first some dinner then I think some blu-ray. Star Trek and then Tron. If i'm still awake then i need to figure out if I can stream to it, it is suppose to have amazon streaming and some other built in, but amazon is my current choice (paid).

Picture is great, at least so far on blu-ray discs. I could not see a "dot", everything really smooth looking. The screen is almost too big, feels like sitting in the front row at the movie theather. Any bigger and i'd be jerking my head around while watching. From my bed that is about 8 feet, 12 if i'm at the computer desk.

Just got done with TWO Thanksgiving meals. One each at each of our daughters. Talk about movin' kinda slow after all that!

Next we came home and I gave the economy yet another shot in the arm...bought a new upright freezer online from Best Buy to replace one I bought back in 1983. The old one still works, but it's NOT frost-free and it's a major hassle to defrost it. Freezer was on sale: $105 off. Got 18-months 0% interest financing on my BB-card. That makes it almost exactly $35/month payment. Hard to beat that kind of financing.

Image test

HDTV in action: Blu-ray playing, notice the "High Definition"

Lots of screen widgets to play with, while watching the video in a mini box, upper leftish.
The TV is about 1 inch thin, so there is now about a six to 8 inch space behind it, so I stuck a flourescent light biheind it. The light comes out around all the edges. I think it would be kool to put some kind of led blue lights back there.

Busy Busy Busy

Step 1
Buy lots of weird parts:

By krunchin_keith at 2011-11-24

Lay them out to be sure you have them all. it helped me to lay them out in the pattern of liquid flow, no tubing cut there yet, but it gave me the sense of how it would look and to be sure i ahd all the fittings and pieces needed.

Poof, (more detailed and additional photos) hours later

By krunchin_keith at 2011-11-25

The test setups, see the lcds on the pumps on, blue in the tubes, you can't tell it is flowing except for at the spinng flow meter and the bubbles in the reservoir, the tubes are cklear with jsut blue in them. Red glow is the radiator fans mounted to the duct boxes.

Now on to the harder part, taking apart the gpus to mount the waterblocks on them, then somehow fit the carefully measures setup into the space of the computer. If i measured wrong, uh well, i'm not winning.

Ouch! Oh my aching ...

Spent the afternoon raking leaves...about 4 hrs straight. Filled close to 15 bags-packed! Sweated up a storm too. Drank (actually guzzled!) two 16 oz glasses of water about 10 mins apart after I was done. (I'd tell ya about how wet my shirt(s) were when I finished, but that's probably TMI).

When I finished raking, I took an 800mg Ibuprofen tablet. Now, almost two hours later I still ache, just not quite so bad. I wonder what I'd feel like if I hadn't taken any pain killers?

Anyway, the job's done for the year...all the leaves are down from the trees. At least I had excellent weather to do it: low 60sF and a mild breeze; sunshine all afternoon long.

WINNING!!!

RandyC think blower, we now have portable gas or electric powered ones that make the job oh so much faster! You can blow them into a large pile then rake them into bags if you have to, I have woods behind my house and just blow mine there.

Keith that is WAAAAY too much work, I hope it all works and keeps the heat down! All that is why I have not done water cooling yet!!

Mikey, yeah, I've got a leaf blower...works like Kr*p. I got it because I wanted to suck the leaves up into a bag and then dump them in the paper bags we're forced to use nowadays. Trouble is...it's heavy and the chute is too short. I wind up leaning over to suck up the leaves and it kills my back. Plus the motor runs too slow to blow wet leaves any distance so that's out...gotta rake anyway.

I've avoided liquid kooling because 1 - expensive, 2 - lotta work to install, 3 - I'm too scared of the consequences of any leaks.

WINNING!!!

You know they make mowers with hoses on them so you can blow them into a pile with the mower and then suck them up with the hose. It is even a 'riding mower', so you would be doing it in style!!! ORRRR you could do it like I have been the last few weeks, let the lawn guys blow the leaves! Every Thursday the lawn guys come to mow and edge and then blow the driveway, porch and mini sidewalk clean. The last few weeks two guys have been coming thru first with two backpack blowers and have been blowing my leaved, even off my deck, into the woods for me. All for NO EXTRA CHARGE!!! They charge me 30 bucks per week to mow and then bill me at the end of the month! No more yard equipment to maintain, I have gotten rid of most of my gas stuff now and only have a few electric things left!

WINNING!!!

Yeah, I know that. But my yard's too small to justify a riding mower. As for a lawn service...too much $$ (although, with all my Black Friday week purchases you wouldn't know it!). However, give me a few more years and some more body aches and I may reconsider it.

I was ready to try it but it says if you have Gout not to, so I can't, oh well!

RandyC it says it is the anti-inflammatory properties of the grapes which is enhanced by the Gin that makes it work for some people.

Sorry to hear that won't work for you Mikey, glad you did read up on it first. I'll let my boss know as he jsut goes around telling people, I bet he didn't even read anything on it himself.

If anyone knows a home remedy to make a person smarter, I know a few that need it.

I think I could use a remedy like that. Seems the older I get, the more aches, pains, memory loss and lack of coordination I wind up with. The next thing you know I won't be able to type anything legible.

Speaking of Parties...
They sent out the various group invites to Christmas luncheons today. I'm associated with three different groups--three different luncheons, on 3 different days. There'll be a fat time at the hoedown this month!

Two of them are out to restaurants, and the third is a potluck for the entire floor my cubical is on. I guess I need to start practicing how to waddle.

My wife just asked me if I was interested in doing that the next time we went to Vegas, apparently it is about 300 bucks for a couple of hours driving a super car on a predetermined route. Of course you can pay lots more and get more time and excitement too! I sure hope the drivers don't have to pay the deductibles!!!

RandyC Prius's are still made of steel and aluminum, super cars are made of ALOT of carbon fiber which shatters if touched the wrong way. It is VERY strong in one direction but extremely brittle in any other! The only advantage the super cars would have had, on that narrow road, is their ability to maneuver but that was negated by the inexperienced, in driving super cars, drivers. There really are times when speed and agility will do alot more towards avoiding being in an accident than pure breaking to a stop.

And now my wife is really PO'd at me. I was going to build a new system out of spare parts; was only planning on buying a replacement video card... Well, I wound up buying a new PS and DVD burner as well. But now it turns out I am going to have to buy another motherboard as well.

The one I was planning on using is dead as a doornail. What's worse is the type I need is a socket-am2, which are no longer mainstream. Not available at Microcenter, either locally or their web store. Found one using pricewatch.com for $27 + free shipping. That will take some of the sting out of it...IF they still have them, and IF this is a trustworthy website, and IF they get it here in a reasonable amount of time (they're located in OH, so they should!).

I'm beat.

Internet sales have slowed down, it's sealsonal for us and this is not our season. So i'm getting bored some days. Well I gave in and decided to up my sales to the next level, not jsut selling on amazon but having our own webstore. It's an amazon hosted webstore as that gives me an interface the same as i've been using the last 2 yeras, actually it merges with what i have. I have the option when listing items to lsit on amazon, our webstore or both. When lsiting on amzon the item merges with any other same item already lsited as in a marrket palce, but in my webstore it is by itself and any details I ahve provided are the only ones shown. I have better control over catagories to put items into, fully customizable. Checkout is still handled by amazon and as I already have over 1000 previous customers I chose to stick with that instead of making them all have to sign up for my webstore again, plau any new amazon shopeprs can easily buy from me with information stored in thier amazon account, so they don't have to re-enter it.

Hard part is setting up the inital layout, i'm about half done with the easy parts, contact pages, about us pages etc. The inventory will transfer over from amazon, all i ahve to do then is add catagories and put each item into one or more catagories.

I'll also be able to list items on the webstore that i can't get on amazon, to have some uniqueness and hopefully attract more buyers into the webstore and off amazon (eliminating the competition).

I chose now to do it as we are slow in the winter and this year we ahve been
our slowest all year, so i feel i ahve more time to paly around and get it set up. Maybe next year i get an assistant (i voted for one in a bikini).

Time to pass out....

I HOPE SO!!!! I bought a pc from a place in Ohio and had to threaten to sue them to get them to credit my credit card for the purchase price, it was a MESS!!!!

Keith you didn't give us the link to the website, is it up and running yet? Sounds like fun times at w*&k though!!

JohnC yes my RAC today is higher than it was but not like it should be! I will go out today and buy another power supply to hopefully fix the problem. One gpu not running is NOT a good thing, but more than making up the difference by switching projects on another one did soften the blow. I am up 200k on one project and only down 120k on another project, so a net gain! When I get this other gpu up and running it should give me another 160k or so per day! I HOPE!!!

WINNING!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I went back and relooked at the page and found some boards I may want to get too! I have several cpu's sitting on the shelf from motherboards that no longer work. AND I still want to hook a pc up to the tv so I can watch some internet thru the big screen instead of thru my laptop.

WINNING but not as much as RandyC

A word of warning...the MB that came in did NOT have a user manual and I couldn't find anything on the internet either.

The link they had to the driver site required me to download and install some file sharing software that runs as a toolbar in your browser. Needless to say; I put it in IE for the download and then removed it as best I could. However, at that site they did have a .jpg of the front panel pin set-up, so that was good. I had to guess at the USB pins, but they seem to be standard 2.0 config, so I got that from another manual.

I had trouble running the WD and Maxtor partitioning software from CD. It seems that the versions I have don't support SATA CD/DVD drives. I had to put an IDE CD drive on the same cable as the HD drive I was trying to format and boot from it that way to get the drive partitioned. Real fun having that hanging out the side of your PC! Maybe there is more current/better software out there somewhere. BTW, put your CD drive in SATA port 1 or 3 as needed to make it a master instead of slave.

If you buy the same MB I did, I can email you the files.

Actually I was surfing the net and found the site http://www.yugster.com in their "Yug over deals" section I found a $75 device that connects any pc to any HD tv, I showed my wife and she bought it for me for Christmas! The device works wirelessly, up to 30 feet or 10 meters, which is plenty for me in family room. I already have a laptop in the family room but it is an older model and does not have an HDMI connection and won't transmit to my tv, with this device it will. I now have an internet connection on my tv with no more pc's needed. That is a good thing AND a bad thing, no more RAC increases due to a new pc but no more increases in the electric bill either!

That means I am now WINNING!!!

ps I MAY still buy a motherboard but not right now, I still have a dual core cpu that thru HT thinks it is a quad core that is sitting on the shelf! It takes a 'special' motherboard though and I need to find it. It would be used to replace an existing dual core pc.
