Hey I CAN WIN AGAIN!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS Randy on winning the last game!!!

Thank you.

However, since you are the leader with 8 wins, that may factor into who the next winner is...NOT.

j/k.

Since you got a discount on the house, your winning time is also discounted and your win has been cut short.

None of that stuff here but it IS getting colder!!! For the next few days it will be BELOW freezing every morning!!! It is currently 41F outside but 75F in my basement and 67F upstairs in the kitchen. My heat has only come on once this year and that was when the guy was here doing a routine check of the system! I have the basement door open and the computer heat is keeping the WHOLE HOUSE warm!! I DO have an electric mattress pad on my bed though that I HAVE turned on at night!!

My wife would shoot me if I let the house drop down to 67F. Warm and toasty using my gas furnace to stay at 75F. (and paying through the nose for it too...but not as bad as oil or electric!)

Let me get this straight,

You use an electric car because gas prices are too high, but you use gas heat becuase electric prices are too high ?

either way, i'm winning just a little

Now Keith, you know that gas heat is Natural Gas while gas for the car is petroleum. In this case gas != gas... (!= means not equal).

Randy why not just get a propane tank for the 'other' car, that way you can run on 'gas'? It is WAAAAY cheaper than electricity!!

BTW it is now the 13th of December, my moms birthday, and WE ARE STILL ALIVE!!!

Mikey, you fail to understand the relative efficiencys of conversion from one form of energy into another.

Electricity is very efficient when converted from electro-magnetic energy into mechanical energy (electric motor). It is pi$$-poor when converted from electro-magnetic into heat energy.

The opposite case is true for natural gas/petroleum. They are VERY efficient to convert into heat, but pi$$-poor when converted to mechanical energy.

WINNING!!!

I too began in high school programming on punch tapes, we had punch cards but the tapes were more 'fun', for someone to play a game of pool on the pc. You could input the angle and force for the computer to hit the cue ball and the ball would move across the screen. Actually a dot on a green screen that moved towards other dots, but you get the idea. That was in 1969, 70 and 71 as that is when I graduated and went into the Navy. I came out of the Navy in 1977 and in March of 1978 got a job as a f/f and got my second computer. My dad bought me my first, it was a desktop a REAL IBM XT that had the clocked turboed, thru a button, from 4.77mhx to 10mhz! It was SCREAMING fast!! My 2nd pc was a Commodore 64SXT, that names sounds funny but it is close, it was a 'suitcase pc'. It was luggable and had a 3 or 4 inch screen. I used it to write a program to help me decide what retirement plan to chose at work, the military style where you work x amount of years and you get y dollars for life, or the one I eventually chose where they put money away in an account, 20% of my base pay, and when I retire I get the cash. I started out at $12,006 a year and the money looked real good at the time. At the end, after almost 24 years, I was making over 60K per year and THAT was a chunk of change going in!! There were some years where I got 17% in raises and some years where there were NO raises!! Anyway Jan 2nd 2013 the cash is mine and I am rolling it over into an IRA. That way it STAYS tax free until I actually take it out!

Randy I knew about the conversion inefficiency, but was having fun too! Sorry buddy!! How about if you just use compressed air to run your engine, how efficient is that? NO FUEL required!!
http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/preview-concept/4217016

That's right air makes the pistons go up and down, NO COMBUSTION! You must recharge the air tanks periodically though.

That brings back memories.

My 1st was called the APF Imagination Machine. I actually found some webpages on this unit. See http://www.nausicaa.net/~lgreenf/apfpage.htm

It had a 6800 cpu at 3.579MHz with 1k ram and 2k rom. The keyboard unit added 8k ram and 12k rom with basic. Additional 8k ram with the expansion module. it used audio cassette tapes for program storage. I had the rs232 serial interface module too and an external 300 baud modem. Video was played on any TV set. I had a 13 inch radio shack color TV. Actually all that stuff is still in my garage. This stuff was fast and huge back in those days.

heres a better shot and specs at home computer and video game museum
http://hcvgm.org/APF_Imagination_Machine.html
This looks more like my unit with the expansion modules attached.

this was built by a calculator company. esentially the cpu unit was a video game console with two joystick controllers and a game cartridge port. To make it a programmable type computer you took out the game cartridge, set the unit on top of the keyboard/cassette tape unit and plugged an upside down "J" connector in the cartrigede port and the back of the keyboard. A 4 port add on expansion module plugged into the lower back of the keyboard unit. it was like the "bus" on a pc but everything was external. the add on modules would then plug in the 4 expansion slots.

I had the 8k expansion ram and a serial module. I don't think i got around to the floppy disk interface. All this was done on my paper route money. I think too i had at least a dozen game cartridges.

i wrote some programs to do a budget and like home inventory or expenses. I remember too writing programs in machine code all hand assembled. there was no assembler or fancy other languages like fortran or c for this back then. One thing i wrote was to load an image from the cassette tape before the main program loaded and display the image like a "splash" screen for whatever was on the tape. Sent it in to a newsletter for the unit and got published. Big deal back then to be published in a 4 page newsletter when you're still a kid.

Finally Friday! And a two-Dew day as well.

Had my youngest granddaughter overnight while her parents went to see the midnight showing of the new Hobbit movie... Well, she decided to wake-up crying just before 3:00 am. Unfortunately, mom and dad didn't show up for another 35 mins to take her home. That movie lasts 2 hrs 50 mins.

Actually John my grandfathers father in law came from Ireland and EVERY year until he died he would put on his scarf and go down to the local bars on St. Pattys day and get blitzed drunk and start fights! He was Protestant so put on an Orange scarf PROUDLY! He did this even though after he got up into his 80's he was blind as a bat!!

Randy isn't it fun to have grandkids, and even BETTER when you can give them back when they aren't cute and cuddly anymore!! I can see I will not be going to that movie in a theater!!

Let the wee'nd begin.

Got off early. Boss left early because he had to travel for family visits, his wife made him go. Another guy left becuase he had very very lower back surgery yesterday and his parts hurt so he could not sit all day and needed to leave. Another guy was out sick with flu. So the boss had me and our other installer in the office after he left. He called and said is anything going on and was told no, only one person came in since he left and the phone had not rung except for one wrong number. The other guy needed to leave early too to go smoke some fish. So the boss said go home. So i did.

Sorry about the timing of that tongue in cheek about the IRA - who are the Republicans and not as your Grandpa was a Protestant.

I heard on today's news about the primary school children shooting. I am sorry.

John don't worry about my ggrandpa, he was who he was and I am who I am, we are related, but I never met the man! I was NOT upset and completely, I think, understood the joke! An IRA, the kind I was talking about, is an Individual Retirement Account that shelters your money while it earns more from taxes UNTIL you start to take it out. Now there ARE some quirky rules but they are designed to get the money back into circulation. Such as you MUST start taking the money out by age 70 1/2 years old AND it must be ALL out by age something or other. That last part is fuzzied a bit by the age at which you die, it is a guesstimate based on that number and who can say when it really is. The lady explained it a bit but it IS complicated. And besides I am a non religious type of guy, so I like everyone! I told you I am ME!!

Griddler time.

Oh I love my friddler. Used it every day since I got except when I made Chili.

Made chicken, steaks, sausage, pancakes, eggs and ....

It does great panckaes. I make 1/2 batch of mix and make them smaller, they cook better but i still get 11-12, a plate full. I've discovered blueberries go great in them and today I made something even better. chocolate chip griddlercakes. Double yummy.

with that i'm winning

Winter Solstice for 2012 occurs @11:12 UTC Dec 21. The Mayan Long Count Calendar ends at that point. The claim that the Earth is also scheduled to cross the Galactic plane soon and trigger the Apocalypse is false. We did that a couple of million years ago and won't do it again for 30+ million years.

If you're still able to post @11:30 am Dec 21, you're probably as safe as you'll ever be.

I am refinancing my own place and just rolling that into the mortgage, that way when I sell the place the next person can pay for them! 9k over 30, or even 15 years, is nothing.

Keith coinky dinks are a fact of life, reacting to them is too!

I have to go over to work on my dads pc today, he STILL pays AOL 21 bucks a month so he can access their system, BUT has had Cox internet for OVER 10 years!! He just can't see that he does NOT need to pay AOL anymore! I asked him how he went on the internet and he 'thru AOL', I said 'does it dial up' and he NO 'I just click the icon' and I said 'why are you still paying' and he said 'because I want to use AOL!' He ALSO has a virus as when he does open IE it goes to a page and he can't navigate anywhere else from it. Today is going to be painful!! He in in his mid 80's and is on an off ramp of the 'internet superhighway'!!

I thought every day had 24 hours in it, but since the world ends tomorrow the day will be cut short some.

I might as well not even get out of bed.

I'm ready for a big change.

I kind of think though, somehow, i'll still have to w%&k tomorrow same ol', same ol'.

there even could be a chance i'm winning

Keith does that mean a storms a coming?

Sorry Randy I misread it, you are right and I AM STILL HERE TOO!!! That measn I have to go see my family on Monday and the wifes family on Tuesday, DOUBLE UGH!! I went to help my dad with his new Dell this past Wednesday and all he did was YELL AT ME the whole time! I tried talking to my moms every day visiting Nurse and all my dad did was interrupt and not let me talk to her! It got so frustrating, I KNOW my dad still loves my mom but he is NOT a medical professional, like the Nurse is, and I wanted an unbiased opinion on some things. My dad is NOT going to let ANYONE talk to the lady without him being present and answer ALL questions himself! The Nurse brought up a point about my moms knees hurting whenever she is moved and the Nurse was wondering if it was because in her head 'she THOUGHT it was going to hurt so said OW right away, or if she was waiting for the pain before actually saying OW'. My dad wouldn't let the Nurse talk to me about it AT ALL! He was ADAMANT that it was BECAUSE of the pain not a PRE pain action. I tried to give my dad an idea to find out and he REFUSED to even listen to it! I finally gave up and walked out, Christmas is NOT going to be fun!! The idea was to sitract her and then move her legs, if she said OW right away you know it is the pain, otherwise it her THINKING it is going to hurt, you know psychological. My dad even REFUSES to leave her alone when he takes her to PT at the hospital. They can't do anything to her as he keeps intervening!! Now he is mad because they won't call him back for more PT! I was an EMT for 24 years and saw this ALL THE TIME, spouses think they know best and are afraid to see the person get hurt so instead nothing gets done and the person NEVER gets any better!!

SORRY for venting guys....I will cede my win to the Mayans for fooling ALOT of people!!!

Keith does that mean a storms a coming?

No it is going. The wind from the west is blowing offshore and the storm is brewing at sea and going farther out. It's rather sunny now and the wind has decreased some here.

Yesterday was a really quiet day.

I was expecting today to be too. i used my morning time to research a little backups. Then another employee came in dragging his little kid with him. There was lots of ruckus then and when the boss showed up and gave the kid a noisy toy it got worse. So i got less than nothing done. Then an order came in and then UPS showed up, suddenly i have more to do than i can think of and was already trying to w&%k on 6 things. Now i've got all the real w&%k out of the way and the other guy has left, maybe i can get some serious stuff thunk up.

I'm behind schedule now on this and with our former file server now dead, all but the raid array which got stuch into another computer, non server beefeyness but workable, and anyway we are a low volume usage so a full blown beefy fileserver is really more than we need. Anyhoo, i'm now concerned about the age on the raid array. The drives were repalced once so those should last, but the hardware is getting aged. So i've got to think about some more backups and drive images than before and now it was the time i hoped to get to it.

I can get away with like one image, i have some decent, fairly easy to use software that will make image copies into smaller ".xml" (movable) files or capable of being burned to dvd. I can get by with one from the server as not much changes in it and just continue to make the smaller sql daily ".bak" backup of the database. I think i can do all the systems and in case of bad failure restore them to another drive in little time and continue w&%king. I plan to add two 3TB drives ($134 ea) into the data server for some backup image storage, and possible make weekly images without filling up one and only keep the last few for each system. I also need to replace the failed data backup drive that failed so at this time i'm getting two more 3TB drives to repalce the failed and good one.

Restoring an o/s and resetting everything up for me is time consuiming here and as i have other tasks to do also i have to do some things the cheapest easiest way i can.

i think i can do the above and still maintain a decest schedule and my sanity.

by the way, i'm winning

Burned my first Blu-Ray disk last night after getting the burner for my birthday LAST YEAR. I have used it to copy a movie off a disk, but haven't burned one until last night. Not sure how long it took to burn, but took approx. 25 mins to verify. I went to bed after I started the burn. The software only logs the last process complete.

I played parts of it when I got up this morning and it looks good.

ALRIGHT, thanks for that Randy, I always wondered how long it would take!

Keith I may have some good news for you:
Just days after getting dinged by Netflix (NFLX) for having one of the slower cable Internet services out there, Time Warner Cable (TWC) has announced plans to increase download speeds for its Standard Internet service by 50%, from 10Mbps to 15Mbps. Time Warner Cable says that all current “standard” customers will “get the speeds automatically when they are rolled out to your division,” so there’s no need to do anything extra to get faster web services. Netflix earlier this month released data on which ISPs delivered the fastest average Netflix streams and found that Time Warner Cable ranked seventh behind services such as Google (GOOG) Fiber, Verizon (VZ) FiOS and Comcast (CMCSA).

Don't you have Time Warner cable at the beach? I know Emerald Isle does and am guessing it covers alot of NC. Up here in Northern Virginia everyone is either Verizon DSL or FIOS, Cox or Comcast but NO Time Warner.

Sounds great. when i bought new drives, i bought LG blu-ray Disk Rewriters. O don't think though i've burned any types of discs in them yet. I should be making some archive backups on DVD. I stil lgot like 90 blanks from 5 years ago. I do also have 20 blank blu-rays, and still blank CDs. Too many things to do and so little time.

Here where my backup "tests" at w&%k yesterday.

First backup tests good

Made images of the drives. These end up a a dat file, an xml file and a bunch of files that are 672,000K max. That option lets you move them around on drives or burn the files to DVD.

This took a little trickiyness as not all the backups, at this time, end up on the actual backup drives I don't have yet. But all backups are on a differnet drive from any C drive on any of the computers.

I did

server C=8GB D=22GB

my #1 37GB
my #2 33GB
my #3 58GB

My #3 is the older one and i guess has lots of old krud on it, i need to look into what takes up so much extra space and maybe do some deletions. Although now i think of it a good part could of that could be my desktop backgrounds. I never added them to the new windows 7 systems.

Most took around 30 minutes, maybe a little more than an hour for the large one.

I made a batch file, that only needs a little modification from system to system at this time (for the destination). The batch file systemname-date-times the backup sets. When i'm done the one file run from any computer will put the backup to the backup drive with a unique name for that system along with the date and time, so there will be no duplicates. Took a little figuring to determine the run file location as windows 7 sticks on in the program files (x86) and the older systems use just program files.

This is still just a test. But I also wanted to be sure i could move backups around.

My next test when i get the new drives, first thing i'm actually going to do is restore one of the images to a bare drive and then see if i can boot-up from it by replacing the active drive in one computer. I'm suppose to be able to do that, but I need to know that part works before i need to actually use it, or waste time using this whole method.

Then I can set up the actual backup drives and work out how to get the backups to it from each computer. I kind of plan to try manual weekly or at least monthy backup images. These are full "in use" space images. I figured i'd get about 75-80 in 3TB. 4 systems are done, I have at least 3, maybe 7 more to do to do so. So i will be able to get multiple copies, i'm thinking after 3 to delete the old ones or do like i do for other backups, delete the old weeklies except the last one of each month and then keep a few of those. Sometimes if something goes missing, it might be in an older copy. Or put some of the older ones to dvd for archival storage.

Still a work in progress.

I need to get my home systems, that is the ones still alive done too. O do have multiple copies of most "Data" but i don't have any copies of the entire o/s, except for the two here that run raid mirrors, each of these has a c drive and a mirror of it. Bit i'd fell better with another "hard" copy even if it is slightly older.

Once a few years ago, I went on vacation and turned everything off. When i got back both my network data drive and backup copy drive were fowled up and everything was lost. I try now to make sure i have more than 2, use differnet machines and devices. They say don't put all your eggs in one basket, but no one said make sure you don't use all the same "cheap" type baskets.

Well i think now most of my data is well protected, but just the time it would take to restore a system and add all the programs back and settings, its just getting too much, especially once you become "in charge" of more than one system. Between home and the other place, I have at least 12 to 24, although at this time a lot of the "Spares" are offline, no extra time or extra money to really keep them going.

@Mikey,
No we have Charter which here uses DOCCIS 3 now, they gave us free upgrades a year ago. I get average around 30Mbps but i've gotten 46 or 53 at times, I think I can get up to 60Mbps and more if i upgrade and pay them more.

I do backups once a month similar to that, I do a full image backup of all of my machines, even my Server, once a month. I only keep one backup copy though as of right now, I go thru and delete the old one as soon as the new one is complete. I have intentions of getting a large drive, I use a 2tb drive now that has 1.25tb free, but have not done it yet. I will put it in a different machine and not back it up but instead use it to backup the backup drive.

I have mostly 1TB drives. I had in mind to get sometime about 100 klams. 1TB was $76, 2TB $106 and 3TB $134, believe it or not 2.5TB was even more and the 3TB model. So since the extra 1TB on the 3TB over the 2TB was only 28 bucks extra, I went with those. Green drives of course.

oops, game time, gotta run....

I was thinking the same thing, a nice 3tb drive and keep two full sets of backups. I have one machine that backups to a secondary drive within the machine itself, it is a 2tb drive, the backup drive, and is about half full with 5 variations of the backup. A nice 3tb drive could do it too, putting all my backups onto one drive in one place.

I am STILL HERE so I guess I made it to 60 years old, WOO HOO!! My wife and I went out yesterday and bought our Christmas gifts for each other, the expensive ones, and we basically got each other the same thing. We got each other Ipad 4s, the one with the retina display, I got a 16gb model and she got a 32gb model. Both are wifi only, her work phone can setup a hotspot if needed but mine will replace the laptop I am typing this on. I DID buy an external keyboard w/ stand so we will see how it goes, I can always return it and get a laptop if it doesn't work out. I like my Iphone5 and she loves her Mac laptop so they should be okay, but no crunching on it for me. THIS laptop was my only Malaria cruncher right now, so yesterday I switched another pc back to Malaria, menaing my RAC should go up just a little bit. This laptop is a dual core but is only using a single core to crunch with as the lag is too big otherwise. It is not new and needs to be replaced with something. I put 32 bit Win7 on it but it only has its max of 2gb of ram so although it works it is not the fastest around. I had even bought a SSD drive for it but I guess it will go into something else now. My wife got a 32gb model because she takes pictures with her Canon 7D, $1500 bucks when she got a year ago, and wants to look at them on hers. She takes pictures in 'raw' format, meaning they are frickin huge!!!

WINNING!!!

Happy Birthday Mikey.

---

Amazing, For Christmas my boss gave me an iPad with Retina Dispaly, 64GB, with Wi-Fi and Sprint (no subscription though)

This is suppose to be twice as fast as my iPad 2. I'm excited to use it but don't want to turn it on yet, yeah know all that setup stuff, until i have a long free day. I need to transfer alll my apps from ipad 2 to it. i think i can do that with itunes. The problem through will be with my 4 games. To transfer those i have to install a new copy on the new ipad, then do an in game transfer from old device to new device. Somehow it chances the registered unit in the online database then when i start the game on the new ipad all my stuff will be there. Then i can't paly on the old device.

The old gen 2 is 16GB with dual core a5 cpu and 1024x768-132ppi graphics.

The new gen 3 is 64GB with dual core a6x cpu and quad core graphics at 2048-by-1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi) [Double the old model]

Now supposedly on the cellular, you can sign up for month to month service and start-stop-restart-restop it any time. I may set it up and only use it when i travel. Will be great as dad is still on dialup so next visit i can play games. I'm just not sure how much data my games suck up and which plan to get. You get 300M, 3GB or 6GB a month but i'd only be using it 1 week, you still pay for one month but you can use up to your limit, haven't looked into what happens when you exceed that before the end of the month. Around here though i would not need it, i have wifi access here at home, the office and there are some free spots around.

Now here's the catch, they changed the power/data connector. So all my ipad 2 cables won't fit. i bought 6 foot cables as where i usually plug in power 3 foot is not enough and it was easier to buy 6 foot cables than add a/c extensions cords to the power adapter and buy extra power adapters since mostly i plug into usb ports on computers or usb charger ports on an adapter. But i did find a small adpater from the old to new. There was one that was about an inch long with no cable between the in and out, which would make a huge 2 inch thing sticking out the side of the ipad when you plug that in and the old cable into it, which would be kind of ackward in some places. I found another that is a 3 inch adapter cable so i could plug in and fold it under the ipad hiding most of the bulky connection. I'm ordering some of those. Then i can just keep all my existing cables in place and use either ipad. Although i was thinking once i transfer everything to give my old ipad to someone as a gift. Have to think on this some more as i might be able to put it to use so i can do things and game on the other one at the same time.

Same from me Mikey!

...You two Apple geeks can just keep your iPads. When I got my Android Tablet (the Viewsonic GTablet that died), it was to replace my PDA. That's really all I wanted to do--no computing/games...just calendar and task reminders...plus a few ebooks and notes here and there. I was definitely not happy when it died one month out of warranty.

The Samsung Galaxy 2 tablet I replaced the Viewsonic with has a much better gui and support. The screen is only 7" instead of 10", but I can use it. I'm running Milkyway on it, so it crunches two WUs every 12 hrs or so. The unfortunate part about the Andoid BOINC app is that it doesn't support Internet Proxies. So I can't upload/download WUs except at home. Occasionally I run out of work at w@^k!

WINNING!!!

[edit]Just looked at the forecast for tomorrow. They are now calling for a White Christmas here...about 1" accumulation...mixed feelings about all that...[/edit]

I wouldn't call myself an apple anything. I've always stayed away from them and those mac thingies. I only used one apple thing like 30 years ago and that was to try to set some stuff up for the boss. I could never fully figure it out and stuck with my dos computers. Never touched (litteraly) one since.

The only reason i have ipad's is they are a job related tool, we only get them because the boss gets reimbursed from one of our vendors if we install thier app on it which is a tool to help spec out thier products and install them.

I've kind of stayed away from using it, except for games, although i do have a lot of the same apps on my ipad that are on my android phone. I only today, after 10 months tried the icloud email. Very basic but it functions and is kind of easiy to use and share. I have an account and the email appears on my ipad, pc, webpage mail and i was able to also add an imap access on my android phone. I may use it more and switch some of my email over although i already have multi location access to my email either through webmail on any computer or my android cell phone anywhere i am, so i really don't need icloud mail.

i have my music stored somewhere else so i don't need itunes. i don't do a lot of pictures and already have several ways to share those. so really a lot of the ipad/itunes/icloud/iwhatever is just duplicate for me.

and i'd rather not get locked into one set service (don't put all your egss in one basket kind of thing). Almost ianything is not available on an android or vice-versa, you need other apps, maybe similar or same brand, but then they don't share android-istuff. Some web stuff can be done either device. i tend to these days like things i can do on my pc at home or office and also have android mobile access. i try to split services up so that email is not tied to my internet provider, music is not not tied to whatever, etc.

Now it is easier to navigate an ipad and start apps than find a program, sometimes, on a pc. but then you are limited to apps and not all programs or services have an app, so there are some things you can't do. However editing a spreadsheet or full blown document tyoping is much better on a pc with mouse and keyboard than touchscreen, even some webpages are hard to use with touchscreen. So in realilty you need both and do some here and some there.

ps,
Had more of those chocolate-chip panckaes this morning, i'm on a sugar high now between the chips and the syrup, not to mention what is in my koffee too.

Good news Keith:

AND

I bought two usb to lightning adapters on the net and both work just fine, they are NOT the 'official' ones so are MUCH cheaper and as I said both work just fine.

I am not envious of you having to move stuff from the old ipad to the new ipad but a 64gb ipad, I AM a little jealous of that!! Although I REALLY have no idea what I would do with all that 64gb!

John that is almost twice what cable is, I think. I think basic cable is only 10Mbps here in the Colonies, although lots of them are now offering upgrades from there. Verizon Fios has a 300Mbps option for just over 200 dollars a month just for it, tv and phone are extra! Now in Hong Kong you can get 1000Mbps EVERY WHERE! A lady came to one of my wifes camera outings from Hong Kong and was VERY disappointed at the SLOW internet speeds in the US. She said they even have FAST wifi EVERY WHERE!! I think the problem is the sheer size of the US compared to Hong Kong, but that doesn't explain the big cities at all! How can they do it for free while every where else it costs money?!

My wife and youngest son took me out to dinner last night to a new local steak place, I had the ribeye, and it was DELICIOUS!!! We went out to the same place last Tuesday evening and I had the Prime Rib, it too was DELICIOUS!! Afterwards we came home and I opened presents...guess what I got Keith....I got the SAME little duster thing you got!!!! I had put in on my 'wanted' list on Amazon after you gave us the link, and my oldest son gave it to me...KOOL HUH!!! My youngest son gave me some 'Reserve' Boubon, ALSO delicious!! My wife gave me my iphone5 several months ago, so it was an early birthday present.

I AM DEFINITELY WINNING!!!

Yeah Mikey, those are the adapters I'm talking about. I did not buy the first one. Intead I got the one that is actualy a short cable, and made sure too i did'nt order from the places that say "ships from hong kong".

Anyway, i'm the same, i don't fell like all the migration. I think though, but not sure, that the itunes backup can restore to another ipad, or at least copy all the apps. The games i have take special care to "migrate".

Anyhow i'm hone now for the day. it was a short day. I did some stuff this morning, filled 4 orders, plus 1 personal order. Yahoo, sold off the 3rd of 4 gpu waterblocks i ordered that did not fit my units.

I'm about breaking even. Then did some organizing. I've got too many things to remember, I have to start making lists now. I use to be able to remember 100's of accounts and passcodes, but i've got my own and then office accounts plus manageing 12 or so computers. The info is getting blurred, i guess my internal memory is full and needs to be wiped. This past year i've done so many of those clicks on "forgot password". I try not to use the same password as any other account, in case someone breaks into one, that's as far as they go. But it's getting more difficult especially with ones i don't use daily. So i did some updates on my index cards at the office.

I brought home a bunch of leftovers. This time of year customers bring us gifts. Some of the other guys take off and don't get any. It ends up the bossman and myself take all the food home. I brought home a 1/2 bucket of sticky popcorn, chocolate balls, white pretzels and fake cherries, the other 1/2 I already at at the office last week. Also a whole try of three types of lunch meat, four cheeses and lettuce with two bags of rolls, a jar of mustard and a jar of mayonaise. I'm set for the week at least.

I'm, munching on a two inch think sandwich now.

Keith I have also reached critical mass and use a program called LastPass, it is net based but is encrypted on your end so the website cannot unencrypt it without working hard on it. It works on everything you own and integrates into both Windows and Mac browsers. It even works on a USB stick so you can take it with you to use public pc's and not be worried about someone else getting your data. It will even fill in the info for you or not if you chose. Do NOT forget the login info though!!!!
Keith I love THICK sandwiches too, they are just 'comfort food'!

John I am jealous, I love coleslaw, salmon to me is like liver, if it is prepared right it is delicious, if not I do not care for it! It sounds like yours was delicious!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TOO Swiftmallard!!!
AND to everyone else too!!

I just got back from my sisters house where we had my families side of Christmas, we were supposed to go to my wifes side tomorrow but her sister, brother in law and their son are all sick and on antibiotics! My wife is negotiating a day for us to go, but it is up in the air right now as the sisters family wants the weekend, but my wife bought tickets to something and they are non refundable and were EXPENSIVE!! I am staying out of it!! My mother in laws birthday is in January and they were all going then anyway so it may end up being then!

Au contrare mon ami, I am back and WINNING!!!

Hey I used my wifes Ipad this morning and it did NOT work for me, so I am now looking for a new laptop to replace this old one. I am looking for a Win7 64bit Pro or better laptop and found this one at my local MicroCenter:
http://www.microcenter.com/product/404524/ProBook_4540s_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Brushed_Aluminum#

Christmas cash makes up the difference so the price is neutral. The one listed is an I7 quad core that can do 8 cores if I want it to, as IF I wouldn't!! It also comes with 8gb of ram and the screen is the same size as this old one. It also comes with wireless N so I will have to upgrade my wifi to N shortly. Like alot of people I still have G right now but with more and more things using N I am going to have to figure out how to add it. I have Verizon and they will send me a new router for free but there is no guarantee I will get one that does N, I may just get another that does G.

It is SNOWING!!! The temp is 33F and there is ice and nsow on my cars and the grass and a little bit even on the roads, that is VERY unusual for my area!! It is snow flurried on Christmas Eve, it hasn't snowed ON Christmas Day for me for like TEN YEARS! I usually get my snow come January, February and March as opposed to the November December time frame. Last Winter I got less than 3" the WHOLE season!! I LOVE years when I don't have to shovel!!

I am STILL WINNING!!!

Posting for a win, now that Boxing Day Bank Holiday has passed, and wwe head for the New Year as a means to ...

I got a call yesterday from the guy in charge of my retirement money and he said they had mistakenly sent me a check and they were taking it back! I had no choice but to say 'okay'. Since I turned 60 this past weekend I am retiring this coming Tuesday, the 1st of January, I have no choice as those are the rules. But anyway they were not supposed to send me January's check as I will be retired and I now get to decide how to spend the money, not them!! On the 2nd I will be moving it someplace else that gives me a TON more investment choices!! The guy that called me is off the 1st so I can't do it then.

SwiftMallard I try not to shovel unless it is so much that the mailman won't stop! A few years ago I bought an electric snow thrower and it works okay, better than a shovel that is for sure! BUT it isn't very good when the snow is too deep, you have to pick it up and kind of take passes at it to get it down to the level so the snow fits into the front chute. But it IS better than lifting all that snow up and killing my back for the next 2 weeks!! A couple of years ago my neighbor had a squeegee and set his alarm clock so that every two hours he was out 'shoveling' his driveway with it. I told him that was TOO MUCH WORK AND EFFORT!! He has now moved back to Michigan so his wife and kids can 'experience' snow again! She is from Australia and the kid was 3 years old when they left.

WINNING!!!

Another half day off, just got home for lunch, then i have the rest of the day to goof off. Will probally do the same tomorrow and moanday, then i get all of tuesday off again, btu then it will be back to full time.

Got a call last night at 9:30pm. Dad had hit is life alert but could not be reached, so they sent the rescue squad out. About another 1/2 hour i got anohter call, he had fallen down in the driveway and could not get up. The rescue guys bandged his elbows which he scraped up trying to get up, that was about all. I called him and he seemed fine. He had gone out to prune some branches that were swaying in the wind causing the automatic light to keep turning on and off. He said he had been down about 30 minutes before he hit life alert, he tried to get up but just could not. He's been looking/thinking of moving back up to virginia into an assisted living place, maybe now he'll give it more serious thought and do it sooner than planned. In virginia, Hampton or Newport News, he'd only be 2 hours drive away from me instead of 12+ or by plane. I could at least visit more often.

I hear a turkeyhamwich calling me...

BUT it isn't very good when the snow is too deep, you have to pick it up and kind of take passes at it to get it down to the level so the snow fits into the front chute. But it IS better than lifting all that snow up and killing my back for the next 2 weeks!!

WINNING!!!

I got to use my snow thrower for the first time last night on a decent amount of snow. The times I've used it before, the snow was an inch or less deep. The dry stuff would blow back in my face instead of to the side and the wet stuff would just clog up the snow thrower.

Last night I went out about 7:30pm to clear the driveway. The snow was between 4 and 6 inches deep. I now know that the snow thrower will work on 6" of snow, but it doesn't like it very much! Had very little wind at that time, so the snow went where I wanted it to (for the most part). It took just under 1.5 hrs to clear my 125' of newly (last April/May) poured concrete driveway. Had to go slow in those 6" areas or the snow thrower bogs down and stalls. Keeping the extension cord out of the way just added to the fun. Had to use the shovel to clear out around the cars. The snow thrower wasn't much help there...

THAT is why I live in Virginia and NOT Michigan!!! I don't NORMALLY get that kind of snow, just a few inches and now I can afford to just sit tight and wait for it to melt away, which I do most of the time now. I need the snow thrower only when it is too deep for the mailman to stop at my mailbox, but it is usually a few days before he even tries. My drive is a little bit over 25' long and at a slight angle, maybe 20 to 25% grade.

Keith I am having a honey baked ham sandwich for the 3rd day in a row for lunch! DELICIOUS!!! We bought it to supplement the 22lb turkey my dad bought and people only ate about 10 slices of a 9lb ham, so LOTS of leftovers!! My sister plans the menu and tells people what and how much to buy, so not my fault. BUT we won't be spending $70 on a ham again!!

WINNING!!!

Actually the turkeyhamwich escaped, i wasn't fast enough to ketch it. I did manage to wrangle a roast beast onto the grill. This was new. I took a hamburger type bun, put mustard and mayo on it, then some thinly sliced roast beef, cheese, more beef, more cheese. Then i skwished it like a panini in the griddler and heated it up for a few minutes, You need to put butter or oil on the bread to make it sort of burn or brown, but i didn't so it was not as pretty looking, but still very tasty. It was good I went back and made a second one.

ME TOO!!!

Not me. When I'm on vacation, I'm too groggy this time of morning to be much of anything.

The overnight low was 9F, and now I have to wander out to the end of the driveway and retrieve the morning paper. That's the coldest it's been so far this winter.

Spinning...

I tried using my new leaf blower to clear snow. The results were so-so. It was tough to start but with some patience it got going OK. It worked well to clear a path but to clear then entire walkway still took a shovel. It did next to nothing to blow away packed snow where someone had walked or a car had driven. I'll have to stick with a real snow thrower and shovel for the driveway. Clearing the deck was much easier but it still took just as long as with a shovel and broom.

Trying a different keyboard. My old old old one was acting funny. I've been going backwards in keybaords. I kept having trouble logging in on websites. Other typing seemed msotly normal. It was when i hit shift, when i log in i type rather fast my combos sometimes. I finally noticed sometimes when i type, that the capslock and scroll lock light flashed on-off again. I think it is getting flakey. So i've gone back, to a white full size keyboard. i think this is from my windows 98 system. Types rather well.

Keith,

Your spelling is looking a lot better, but you're still having trouble with some caps...esp. "i".

I just pulled the battery packs out of my car--now PHEV Disabled! :(

The cold weather is just too much for them, and all the methods I've tried to keep them warm just aren't working. Back to 45 mpg winter mileage now...Rats! BTW, I did the same thing with my first system in the dead of winter.

i think the i problem with is with my eye's. Actually it is more I just don't caps the i due to my carpal tunnel, bad fingers and now artritic pains setting in.

today's weather is on a budget, mother nature could not afford rain, so we get drizzle due to cut backs. Even 'ol man winter is taking it easy as the temp is in the high 50's F.

Well i worked on my budget too for next year. Oh i really don't have one, but it is a part of my checkbook so i do one anyway, using mostly averages or last years expensie totals. I use some of the progress bars to just keep from over spending way too much to quickly in some areas.

Gas was up, but only 6% over budget.

I did good on my entertiantment and computer hobby expenses, most of those came in at less than half of the budgeted amounts. I really wanted to keep those down since i bought two new computers the year before and hope they last 5 years, the non-spent part goes towards future replacements.

Auto repairs/maintenace (everything else but gas and insurance) where high this year due to that salt water environemnt damage. The yearly average though is not too bad at about 650 bucks. Much better i think than some of my past vehicles. This one though is now getting into year 16 and over 100,000 miles but it's a Chevy so it, like me, is at the half-life mark.

Now speaking of half-life, i started on my taxes, mostly i use some estimates to get a feel of what the damage will be. I came across this ira contributions, and starting next year i'll be able to put another grand away. i'll also be able to join that aarp group. Scarry. Anyhoo i don't do lots of complicated stuff with taxes. I donated some money already, i'm just glad to get them out of the way. I get back maybe a couple hundred bucks which part of i need to donate to the state. I don't care anymore, i jsut don't want to spend 2/3rd of the year like osme people do try to worry over it and pay it off. Get it done and gone. I do have to wait for offical forms w2 and investment stuff but usually i'm pretty close as my checkbook keeps all the totals for me and i have it set to print me out a few memorized reports which gives me what i need. I use an online service and most data copies from last year, then i just proofread and correct the numbers to this year, done quickly in less than a day. Now i wait for the forms to finalize all the numbers, let it do the state calculations and i'm done.

Now on to lunch and another one of those "free" sandwiches. I got about 6 left.

I am not having any problems.

Randy you are now back to being the 'average guy' with a Prius!!

Keith I was FORCED to come up with a budget for next year when I saw the financial planner earlier in December. I now can only spend x amount of dollars a month, just like always, but will no longer have any bills!! Also since I will have no bills I can hopefully make more money than I spend!!

Finished my weekly grocery shoopping. For a while I've had "Out of Milk" on my smart-android (sometimes phone). it's a shopping list. Fairly easy to add items or cross off ones. Then when i decide to shop (impulse stop) i have my list with me and as i shop you tap the item and it crosses off and moves below the still to get items. Kool. Kool (did I say that already). Now even more kool is the webpage. You use the same login and your list is on the webpage, where it is even easier to maintain with full size keyboard. When you add items, after a sync they appear on your android's list. There probally is an ipad app too.

Mikey, you asked what would you do with 64GB ipad. I don't quite know either, but my 16GB (13.85GB Capacity) ipad is about half full (7.85GB free) with 50 apps (4.96GB) and other (1.01GB). Some of the games have lots of data. I don't have lots of pictures on it (100 or less), no music and no movies. I don't see myself filling it up but if i travel again i can take lots and lots of pictures and edit them later keeping the good ones (hint).

Yeah that is the same problem I have...the internet goes out and so does my phone and tv!! Package deals are sometimes good and sometimes bad. Usually my cell phone still works but not always.

Keith NO everyday paydays in your future, UNLESS you plan on playing AND WINNING the lottery that is!! Sorry buddy but w*&k is what is in your everyday future, until you can retire that is!! At that point HOPEFULLY happy days will be here!! And NO not the Fonz either!! I just tried to move my money away from my old work and into an IRA with Wells Fargo and there IS a problem. They don't know how to do it!! Seems not many people have done it in a long time so Prudential has forgotten how!! Prudential handles the City's retirement plans and a phone call to the City is hopefully resulting in a contact persons name at Prudential that can help me do it!!

Hey John if your weather comes from me it will get colder then warmer again soon! It was cold yesterday, today and tomorrow, as in the low 30's, slowly rising into the mid 40's by this weekend and by mid week next week it is supposed to be up into the mid 50's for the highs!

Honey and a little whiskey works for my neighbor...he says the whiskey cuts thru the junk and the honey coats the throat to keep it to quiet for a bit. He makes up a small batch, in a pint jar and only takes a tablespoon at a time. The Doctor told my wife to take an 'expectorant', both seemed to work for each of them.

Winning and hearing my baby Shih-Tzu winding up our Russell, and it's 02.00amon Saturday morning ...

2am!!! I think the baby needs a time out! Now I remember why I don't want any more animals to take care of, my patience is too short for that kind of stuff!

The Holiday season for me will be officially over as of tomorrow. I've only been to w@^k 3 days since Dec 22. Granted, that stretch cost me 4 days of vacation time, but I think it was worth it!

Enjoying a piece of buttered sourdough toast with koffee whilest watching it drizzle yet again. We've had only one/half day of the shine so far this year, the rest has been grey and dreary.

My 'chores' are much simpler, I had to install the sound drivers for a friends pc, I am trying to repair the harddrive of another friends pc--spinrite is doing the work on it with 25 hours down and a guess of 55 hours to go! I am also trying to get two other pc's up and running here at home, one went down when my wife shut down the network hub and the pc didn't come back on afterwards and the other went down because the cpu fan wasn't working. Both of those are now sorta fixed, the one with the bad cpu fan is running but when rebooting needs the F1 key pressed, hopefully that won't happen too often. The other one I am trying to setup as headless but the wireless network card isn't coming up on its own so it crunches, but is pretty much useless as it won't connect to the network to return or get new work. I am HOPING connecting a cable to it will let me make it work remotely and then it will do its own thing and I can then remove the cable afterwards. It is XP so maybe, maybe not.

OH and I finally ordered my NEW laptop today!!!! I ordered one from TigerDirect, it is a Dell with a 17" screen that has an i7-3612QM cpu with 8gb of ram and 64bit Win7 Home Premium on it. It was almost $750 after taxes!!! I am now broke again and have to fix more friends pc's to get some more cash! It is replacing a dual core Dell with 2gb of ram so it is a big jump. The current one works fine but is now 6+ years old and while it has 32bit Win7 Ultimate on it and works just fine, it is time for a new one. I went WHOLE HOG because I am expecting this one to last 6+ years also. Here is the tigerdirect headline:
Dell Inspiron 17R i17R-3158sLV Notebook PC - 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3612QM 2.1GHz, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, DVDRW, 17.3" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It is a quad core that can hyper-thread to 8 cores.
I did NOT want Win8 after testing it for a bit and not liking the 'panel' design of it! It is very much like the Ipad I returned and decided on the laptop instead. I ran Win8 for several months during the Beta testing and while it IS different now, it is still too much like a smartphone for me!

WINNING!!!

Dad was in the hospital over the weekend. He fell three times in the prior 10 days. He had hit his head and after a doctor visit they scheduled a head scan. Results from that showed some bleeding on the brain so they put him in the hospital. The neurosurgeon decided he did not need surgery. But now they have sent him to rehab for maybe 3 weeks. I'm hoping to hear something today.

So my plans to travel have been suspended for now. I was trying to convince him to move up here near us, sooner than later before something like this happened.

Keith, you have all my best wishes too for a speedy recovery for your dad. As my family saw with my mom, it didn't take much to become permanently disabled from a fall and it's downhill from there.

Great googly-moogly. Went for my annual car inspection, expecting to pay 16 bucks. No, bald tire on front and the rear were estimated to last only another 3 months, one brake at lest has only making 1/2 contact and there was again a problem with the idler arm in the front sterring. So to save me having to make 3 visits for repairs I ahd then do it all at once. 4 new tires, new front and rear brakes and rotors for all 4. The steering was able to be fixed with jsut adjustments, no parts but they also put in tie rods and did a wheel alignment. 1800 bucks. That on top of the 1700 bucks i pad 6 months ago. ouch. It better last at least 4-6 more years now. Oh yeah they promised me 3 times, 2 differnt poeple even, that it could be done in a day, one guy even said early afternoon. I said no problem, do it right, i will pick up at 5pm. Got there at 5pm and had to wait 45 minutes. A little dissapointed but now i see they didn't even do the oil change and lube job i asked for. I didn't want to have to worry about all this or making repeated visits especially during the next few months when i may be pre-occupied with my dad. So i'm gonna stop in this morning and .....

Do a walk around too and make sure they did everything right before you go back in, too many mechanics get rushed and 'forget' the small stuff, like a lugnut here or there. In my sons car they 'forgot' to put the oil drain plug back on correctly after an oil change and it cost me a new used engine, $3000!!! Rotors and brakes ARE really expensive for some reason, as are tires sometimes! My wifes Honda CRV, 4wd, is almost a year old and I noticed the tires are getting low on tread. I am hoping she can make it thru the winter but that may not be possible!

The laptop I am 'working on' for a friend is STILL only at 14% this morning, there are LOTS of bad spots on the hard drive, but Spinrite has found only 4 it can't repair. It has taken 4 days to get to 14% and it is estimating another 6 days to get to the end! Of course if it starts finding good spots it will go faster.

My new laptop left Georgia yesterday and went to Richmond, VA, then last night it went from Richmond to Springfield, VA and is now on the truck for delivery as of 5am this morning!! I live about 20 to 30 minutes from Springfield, so it shouldn't be a problem to get here by the end of the day.

I've been out from w@^k sick since noon Monday...wife is down too. We tried to get to our Doctor yesterday, but he's all booked up. We're going to Urgent Care later this morning.

It's nothing terribly serious, just extreme fatigue, aches, plus head and chest congestion. Not Flu though as neither of us has the runs. For that, I must be...

Yeah, it sounds like a lot but it was really 4 jobs in 1. I get a locals discount and probally a volume discount for parts :)

The tech was there this morning and explained to me my bill. I got the oil change for free, that is why it's not on there. He was not there when i picked it up and someone else had finished off the alignment and didn't know about that the oil had been done, so of course did not mention it and it was late and i was tired and running late already for something so forgot to ask. He had someone double check while i was there and even took a look too and showed me the new parts on the car. The clerk had rung it up under "Wheels" when it was the steering parts, making it confusing to me at least, but that was less the idler arm which after the other parts were replaced and adjusted it did not need the idler or pitman arms. The Tie Rods had not been replaced before so they were 15 years old. All in all, my bill could have been more.

I just had my kar re-tired, can I join the klub ?

Woking on my new 3TB data drives. Put one new 3TB in yesterday finally and kopied all the data from the remaining good 1TB to it. Today I pulled the 1TB out and put in the 2nd 3TB drive and in the process of kopying all the data from the new 1st 3TB to the new 2nd 3TB. Some of it goes back into 2004, i need to sit down and do a kleanup i think. After today i kan resume my regular weekly schedule of backups.

One of the 1TB had failed, the other is good and i'll keep it unused for a while as is, then it may get retasked.

Kurrent data and some older data is stored on this komputer on a drive, it gets kopied to a second drive. Also it gets kopied two more times to a second komputer to two drives. Then it gets kopied to the 3rd komputer twice to the 3TB drives. It's all mostly dokument scans (PDF and JPG) and daily backups from like kwackbooks and our SQL database.

Soon i have to figure out how to add two more 3TB drives into the file server which will be used as storage for some image backups of the komputers which i did make and stored temporarily on several other drives on different komputers until i get that set up.

Well yes and no. There was/is only 272GB I think on each of the 1TB Drives. One failed, so the new 3TB is to replace it plus allow room for more expansion and they were not much more in cost for the extra TB's, especially over the price I paid years ago for the 1's, maybe even cheaper.

It took the komputer most of the day, I only had to hit "enter" 7 times, as I have those jobs already set-up, which take me only a second each, walk away for hour(s) come back and check is it time for next one. I could make it 1 job, but i have 7 main folders and like to break it up.

The all day thing is only the whole drive. Normally my jobs only add changes and new files. I have some i run daily at my one station to collect data files from different sources to the first data storage drive. At the end of the week i kan run the main kopy jobs, omittting any of the 7 i feel had no changes. 1 set on my computer, 2 on the second and 2 one the third and i kan do all that in 10 or less minutes. Then there are some special collection jobs i run once a month, only because new files they collect only appear once a month, like when i balance the checkbooks and make copies of the bank statement. When you skip weeks the jobs begin to take longer. Weekly is fine as my main station at my desk has mostly the original and 1 kopy already. The others are just extras in case of a komputer failure or ease of access, if say i have one station too busy doing something i don't want to inturrupt i can use the other to look up some old document.

If i really wanted i could put the jobs into windows scheduler, but i like to "see" things working sometimes and don't fully trush so many automated services to keep working properly. This manual method also me to know things still run fine, as when the one drive failed i knew. if it was automated it could have been months before i checked up and found it dead. Also it makes me look busy at times.

Moving on at the speed of bits....

I did a similar thing yesterday...I backed up my new laptop to my backup machine, it took 3.5 hours but I now have a full image of it after all the updates, some program loads and some tweaking. I do mine over a wireless connection so it takes longer than the wired one. I have bought an 'N' version router to hook up but I haven't done that yet, probably next week. It will be an additional router, not an instead of one.

The laptop I am working on is STILL running Spinrite!! It is at 100 hours now and says it estimates another 300 hours to go! It has found several unusable spots on the drive and that is what takes so long, it copies the data off and then tries to repair that sector, but if it can't it finally copies the data to another sector and moves to the next sector.

WINNING!!!

WINNING!!!

Spinrite was great, way back when you had drives < 1GB. I'm afraid that after 100 hours of run time, I'd say the heck with it and try to recover as much usable data to another drive and trash that one.

WINNING!!!

Well do like i did, replace the whole drive and move on with fun stuff in life.

[rant removed]

So today, i'm taking a break from backup stuff. Will get back to those next week maybe. I've got most of the images for the essential systems made, this is what i want to put on the new server extra 3TB drives. I'll make new ones when i do and i'm not sure how often i'll do those, maybe every 3 or 6 months. The data is done daily so it would not be too difficult to restore and old image of a system, then restore jsut the essential data, and of course probally do umpteen gazillion updates on software again.

Speaking of which m$ is a joke with thier updates. Yesterday had 14 important updates. 10 were security plugs. Thier product has more security holes than the moon has kraters. The other 4 were really [smirk] important. One to update some Arabic Font (which i can't speak or read), One to add something for the Sudan (where i don't live), and one for some game thing (which i don't play anywhere). The forth was the only one i saw any use to to fix yet another bug in ie about something it didn't save correctly. The seurity patches have patched patches by now.

---

Todays fun. In my internet sales I ship mostly one method, USPS Priority Mail. At the time i started i figured to keep things simple. I figured an average rate and adjusted it a few times. Last year i think i ended up at a 21 dollar loss for the postage spent over that collected, about 2 cents an order. I want it close. Little adjustment needed. But i've wanted to offer a slower, cheaper method and a faster more expensive method. I do get some requests which i can't honor at this time nad may have lost some orders, but i still get a lot so what i got works. The problem being is the carriers, USPS and UPS, charge varying rates based on weight and distance. amazon only uses one fixed rate. I can base it on weight but instead of distance, it is one for all. That is the problem in figureing it out. How to be fair to all consumers, and since a lot of the small things i'm selling i don't make a lot on i can't give free shipping as that amount would be more than i make o nthe item. So today i'm setting up a test. On each shipment, it still goes only one way, but i get the option to see the other costs. This is going into separate columns next to each shipment in my spreadsheet, where i'll average each one. Possibly by the end of winter, i'll have a better idea on how to come up with various rates to offer more shipping choices. I suspect though on the faster ones i'm just going to have to add more, if they want it faster it's going to cost more as i have to over estimate so the average charge stays above actual average cost. It's hard because then i always get the one person living in like alaska ordering the heaviest thing we got next day air and then, oops, i've lost thrre times as much as i made. So for now i'm in the research phase to see if i can work out a fair plan for all. Well that took a whole 5 minutes to think out and set-up, now i jsut have to enter my extra numbers for each shipment as they come up and wait, 2 months, for good average results.

I'm still working on other tweeks and refinements in my spreadsheet. Been using it weekdaily now for 3 years. Every sale gives me a little more info and over time i can figure better ways of subtotaling or averaging what becomes clearer as important info to help boost sales.

Hopefully i can get dad moved up here and settled soon. I cut back on inventory in the winter, actually i haven't ordered and "special" stuff for internet sales since about August. Then come spring i do reordering and i have a better picture now of average sales of "hot" items over 3 years. some old model parts are crossed off, either because i can't get them or they are too old, to sell 1 a year is not worth the time. I have a better pricture of what i'll be ordering this year, concentrating more on what sells.

John it is almost 4pm your time, aren't you late for your afternoon nap?

Hey Keith why not just a nickle to each shipment, you said it averaged 2 cents per order, add 3 more cents and count if as potential profit. Oh and if someone wants next day air do you still charge standard shipping? My question would be WHY? To me standard means standard, not at a loss.

Also Java came out day with a note about a MAJOR security hole possibility so more updates will be coming SOON!!

I think you missed the point. At the moment I only offer 1 method, standard. I have had requests for expedited, rush, next day, pita, but i can't change an order amount, so i can't do next day and loose money. I don't have data on how much to charge for 3-2-1 day, express, expedited or next day orders to offer this and let customers choose at time of ordering. This is what i need to sample "what if data" which i don't have any yet.

No at this time i don't really need to adjust my rates. Maybe in the spring i'll raise them that nickel but after i have a sampling of "current shipping". The 38 month average (since i began) is +.07 cents per order. It was -0.74 for 2010, then +0.52 for 2011, over compensated. 2012 came in at -0.02. That is just the shipping part, not the entire order. I made adjustments in the past for changes in methods used, reduced costs since i get "free" boxes now from the psot office, cost of labels and such. Also too some of the big, heavy or long items are gone which eat into that amount and throw off the formulas. I can adjust by weight, up to a point what is charged, but i offer such a mix of 5 ounce up to 70 pound items, one price can't be made to fit all orders and i don't sell as much as amazon to offer free shipping on every order. I do charge a base fee like 5.50 bucks, then a smaller amount per ounce. Then minimum on the small orders is coming in at 6.02 and if the item fits in a flat rate box for 5.22 i'm ahead a little. Customers get the stuff in 2-3 days, but still there are people in such a hurry they don't care to pay more. So now if customers order more items at one time on one order, they pay a cheaper shipping cost per item, but for customer that order just that 1 fuse, pay slighly more for the "handling" and to average out. 1 item = 6.02, where 2 = 3.02 each, 3 would be 2.02 each and so on. It goes up a little for weight, but the avearge shipping per item drops down. I do that on purpose to encourage people to try to think or order stuff together. The formula however i use bases the cost on total order weight and not on qauntity of items. My goal is to keep the actual to the estimate within plus or minus 10 cents. Products change, peopale and customers change and sales change, so an active spreadsheet helps for always changing market conditions. I watch the number to make sure it does not go too far down to quickly. Actually this year, which is only 8 sales days is showing +0.95 cents an order, but so far those have all been small orders, 19 less than a pound and 2 in the 1-2 pound range, still small lite orders, but really too few to get a good sample. I could do something like average it over he last 365 days, but i prefer to just use year to year and watch the numbers as the year progresses. You have to factor in too I or the boss drives a laod of packages to the post office every weekday and i didn't really add for that, that's part of the handling, my time to get items off shelf, kram in a box, slap a label on and transport. I think my method is a fair average, if i make the charge too high, slaes go down. If i make it too low, like free, we loose money and too much loss will not keep us in business. I do sell some items already at below cost, a little money is better than having it tied up in stuff that won't sell, but overall we make money and get rid of extra inventory plus a few regualr good selling items, the bottom line is good. Also too maybe some of those people will call on the phone for other needs, visit our website and send us equipment for repair, so part of the fees we pay for internet sales are actually advertising costs.

Thinks about what everyone is saying?!

I moved the laptop I am working on last night so I could sit at the kitchen table and eat, my wife was out of town all week and I was alone so it wasn't a problem, it appears that the plug didn't get plugged in all the way, by me, and the laptop ran out of battery life and quit overnight! I came downstairs this morning and it was OFF, but I restarted it and it SCREAMED thru the drive right to the same spot it was at last night and picked right back up and is still going. So apparently no harm, no foul!! Whew that was REALLY lucky for me, starting over would not have been a good thing!!

Keith NOW I understand, I thought you would ship anyway the customer asked you to and they still paid for 'regular' shipping. I do have one question though, won't the postman pick up the packages from you, or is that more tv hype then reality?

I ordered a new office chair for my computer room, I ordered it from Staples as it was on sale and it was delivered 24 hours after I ordered it!! The Fedex guy said they ALWAYS do that, it was even FREE DELIVERY!! It WAS not coming from my local store either I got an online delivery email and it tracked the shipment from NW PA and then to me from the time I ordered it to my front door. It made 2 stops on the way at different Fedex spots. I expected it to take about a week as the price of the chair itself was $120.00 OFF!! Then I had a coupon for another $25.00 off and it had free delivery so I said yes and got it. My old chair was a curb side pickup by me from someone who put it out for the trash man. The seat is split down the center but otherwise it is in good shape and was in MUCH better shape then the one that had a broken leg that it replaced. I put it in my garage and drowned it in Lysol for 2 days and then let it dry out before taking it upstairs, it will now go down into my basement to replace a chair with no back and only 1 arm rest! I tend to 'make do' as I only sit in them for a few hours a day each. But this new chair was very nice and since I still had a small amount of Christmas money left over, I had forgotten that my mother in law had given me a check this year, I spent it! When I get checks I give them to my wife right away to deposit them as it is near her water aerobics place.

One MORE thing about me and I promise to stop writing...my financial lady called me yesterday to tell me the check was received and deposited to fund my IRA, so I am now OFFICIALLY retired and done with my old fire department work place! I MADE 5 grand between 3 weeks ago and yesterday as the stock market mostly went up during that time, WOO HOO!! I told my lady that she had best continue that process as her income was partially based on it. I opted to go percentage based instead of fee based as the way to pay the company. Fee based is when they get paid for every little transaction, buying and selling a stock is 2 transactions, whereas fee based in based on how much you have and they a percentage of it and all transactions are free. Some bad investment places make their money by 'churning' an account, that means buying and selling stocks 10, 20 or even more times a day and the investor pays for each and every transaction!! I didn't want to limit her ability to make transactions to keep the money coming in.

WINNING!!!

OK Mikey.

Glad your finances worked out.

I will be having to deal with, I think, My dads here soon.I don't know what he has, but i do have a list he made of insurance, finacial and stuff so if he goes i have a starting point. I'm hoping now his income and finaces are enough to cover any rent at an assisted living place. I think he has good insurance so there should be no medical bills from his hospital stays.

On to finances, I just read that the G-men raised the ira limits for this year so you can put away up to $5500, an extra $500. I turn 50 and can put away anothr $1000 on top of that for being senile. I've been fully funding mine for many years now. I had already set up my plan to do the $5000 over the year and add the extra $1000 near the end. Now i'll have to add another $500 in there somewhere. I use to do monthly automatically, but i'm tired of so much record keeping I switched to manual quarterly contributions. Next year I can better factor things to do it all. Since i've already set some scheduled transfers i don't want to go back and refigure everything this year, i'll just leave it as is and fill in the ketch-ups at the end. Maybe not the best financial strategy, but it is the least mental painless strategy.

Went grocery shopping a while ago just to have something to do. I like my new "Out of Milk" app on my smartphone. I think I can get it on my ipad too. But the best part is they have a full website you can link to, so i can more easily edit the list on the wide screen with keyboard komputer at home. It syncs automatically between smartphone and komputer. So when i get home i add any new items i think i'll buy again off my receipt. It has your items to buy, and any you bought are crossed out. You can check or uncheck items easily. As you walk through the store you can see you list of unchecked to buy items, touch the screen and the item as you buy it and it crosses out moving to the done section. I set up catagories and they are sorted in the order my favorite grocery store is laid out in, mostly (if i can rember it), making it easier. Then during the week as i use something up, I just uncheck it either on the phone or the komputer to put it back on the to buy list, so next to i decide to go to the store, my list is already ready.

This would be handy too for another use. I'm thinking if dad is around and I can teach him how to use a computer some, we could make a separate list for him. He could put items on the list. I could check the list on my way home from w&*k and pick up stuff for him.

ps,
You just missed another batch of Griddler-Kakes aka pancakes. Decided to try something other than blueberry or chocolate chips. So i made up some mix and dumped a lot of cinnamon in it. Man-O-Man, these were extremely delicious.

Later i'll be trying some pok chops for dinner. Haven't griddled any of them yet, mostly just chicken or steaks. Oh yeah I did some honey ham steak too.

I've done all my kookin' whithout any extra oils. I just add some kind of spices on the meat and when it kooks, it also infuses the flavors into the meat. I love the koffee spice rub on steak, i've got two kinds. Then for Chicken i have about 9 or more now. A good mix for pork is maple sugar and course gound black pepper.

Well, I'm not there yet so i guess i have to keep my nose on the grindstone. I figured mine a few yers ago and i could retire now if serverel things happened, like rent never going up again, gas never going up again, my kar never breaking again, and the stock market never going down, and so on, in other words, if nothing in the world, or at least my life, never changed. Could happen ? I guess that had as much chance as the world ending last month. I don't know my current psoition, I guess I should reevalualte my projections, but i'm guessing not much has changed and any extra i put away over those years has just been eaten into by inflation and i'm still in the same place.

My dad is doing slightly better, still in rehab but he is walking. He has some exercise classes and whatever else they think he nees every day. One of my other brothers talked to him and said his spirits were back up and he looked forward to coming up here. I need to call him and see when they are expecting to release him and if he wants to leave right away, i need to get down there. I've also been in contact with his neighbors, i had them go visit him and let me know what they observed. From what I can tell he is good enough to walk and take care of him self some, but not really be left alone as there are some thing he can't do well and some things he should not do, like drive a car. I want to fly down to to be there for his release and get him packed up over a few days and drive him back up here. After that we'll just take things as they come day by day and get though.

I am not there either! But that doesn't count, for me, my wifes lifetime income or the insurance we have on each other when we die. My wife makes, pre tax, roughly 5k per month plus raises for the rest of her life. We did not get survivors benefits, meaning when she dies it stops, but that would have reduced it to roughly half of what it is if we had gotten them. I m 60 now and can get SS at 62 or 62.5 and if I do that I should not need much cash from the account for a LONG time! Just some supplemental money will be needed, not the actual living expenses. I could have gone to a similar to what she is getting plan but chose the lump sum instead. I can pass the cash on to my kids, wife whatever when I die, whereas with her style plan you can't.

That is GOOD news Keith!!

The laptop I am working on is now at 30%, good grief it is taking a LONG TIME!!! The owner will come over on Thursday evening, so he will decide then if it is worth it to keep going or stop and declare it dead. Since it requires no input or anything from me it is just as easy to let it run, the only thing is it is using electricity but it can't be THAT much!!

WINNING!!!

Well if I quit work now, i'd also have no insurance. I'd have to have no problems for 15 years when i could get medicare. Not a pretty picture.

However if I quit now I could maybe, with a very strick tight budget (sorry, no boincin'), make it on cash, savings and portfolio for 12.5 years until i'm 63. I could then start on some retirement accounts but at current level that would only last 13.7 more years until im 76, then i'd be broke. If I live as long as dad at least i've got to make it to 91 (so far), uh another 15 years as a homeless beach bum. Now if I w&*k another 13 years and then retire. I would have enough with what i have now to make it to about 89 and i'm sure i can continue to put money away over then next 13 w&*king years + inheritance, so i should be in good shape come retirement time. Then again inflation is not factored in this amount but i'm hoping interest is growing at least as fast as inflation.

I guess look on the bright side, i've already w&*ked about 70% of my w&*klife off, only 30% to go and i'm over the hump. That's better than the other way around.

Keith I JUST noticed you passed me....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Yeah I made the decision MANY years ago to work for a local government instead of private industry because of the retirement involved. Lower pay but a guaranteed retirement plan was what I chose, that does NOT work for everyone but I was lucky and had lots of options! NO college degree limited me somewhat but then left other doors wide open instead. I am happy I chose what I chose, NEVER did I have a day where I wasn't EXCITED to go to w*&k because of the job!! There WERE days when I didn't want to see some of the PEOPLE there, but NEVER did I not want to do the JOB!! I loved it, hot, cold, rain, snow, ice, filthy places, whatever I LOVED the job!! STILL DO actually!! YES it was even fun when I was driving the back of the ladder truck, they call it the 'tiller man' and lightening stuck about 45 FEET away!!! Scared the bejesus out of me, but it WAS exciting!! Rubber tires meant it couldn't get to me, but it was a little scary just the same. And YES it was even okay when I held the guy with AIDS hand as he passed out and died on his couch!! I WOULD do it all over again if I had the chance!!

WINNING while it is in the 50's here, but only projected to be in the upper 30's on Tuesday!!

Sorry Mikey, didn't know I was even that close, hope I didn't kick up to much dust as I blew past you.

I'm pretty rested from a weekend off from most everything, except griddler cinnamon pancakes.

Now I've got to begin making travel plans, It looks like next Tuesday or Wednesday is the goal, then i'll be gone a week at most, I hope. I need to start looking online for a ticket and see what is available.

But this won't be a vacation, its going to be helping dad pack a few things up and take care of some details, stop newspaper, turn off phone, stuff like that. Then drive him back up here and get temporarily settled in. The we have to go look at a couple of assisted living places.

Off to w&*k now, I've got some orders to fill. I will have to shut down the online store, as no one else can manage anything with it. But I can do that once I know what day i'm leaving and do it the day before.

Keith I do NOT envy you in your tasks with your dad, doing that must just take the energy right out of you! Keep your chin up and stay strong!! Are there many assisted living places near you? I THINK there is a way online to check out their ratings as compared to each other. We have a BUNCH around here, it is a BIG area, and they do have those online, but I do not THINK it is the individual places that do it. You might call your local Family Services Agency and see what they have, it could be called Dept of Social Services instead of Family Services. Ombudsman is what they called the group of people that go to the local nursing homes and evaluate them, it includes the SS subsidized ones.

No putting up with what my boss won't do while i'm gone is going to zap all my energy.

Assisted living near me = 1. There's others up in Virginia which is about a 2 hour drive. I'm sure there are some others in between. Dad looked into one in Hampton and one in Newport News. We used to live in Hampton. The rest of the family lived in Hampton and before I came along, Nrewport News. He worked at the Shipyard There too. He wanted to go to Newport News, but that was before I told him about the local. After we get him here, I'm hoping a tour will change his mind plus the fact he'd be 3 miles away instead of 2 hours. I'm not going to be able to visit as much at 2 hours away which means not every weekend. 3 miles means some week nights and most weekends. I kind of think services and costs will be about the same. I think the closeness factor will have more weight on the situation.

I blinked and missed winter. I need a t-shirt, it's like into the 70's F (outside) here today.

Don't worry Keith, 30F-40F temps are sitting halfway through Tenn., and heading your way!

I agree with ALL except the last part!

Randy you beat me to it, I was in the mid 60's the other day, now I am in the mid 40's heading DOWN to the low to mid 30's by the weekend!! I think Keith is in for a MAJOR jolt of Winter not quite being gone just yet!! And besides we are both in the 'Mid Atlantic' region, that means January and February ice storms are still very possible and the local weatherman just yesterday was saying that SOME computer models are talking about me playing some catch-up on my 7 inches of missing water in the area! He was talking the SNOW word too!!

WINNING!!!

I think this situation is beginning to bother me in some way, I'm having toruble sleeping, that is finding a comfortable position to lie in. I haven't had any troubles up until 2-3 nights ago. I usually do fall asleep but it's been difficult these last few.

I looked at tickets last night, but then felt a little sleepy. Decided to lay down and watch tv and come back to it, i never got up. Was uncomfortable but to tired to get up. I did fall asleep but then awoke at midnight thirty and watched the same tv show again, since i fell asleep and missed part of it. Don't know but i may have fallen back asleep and misssed part of it again. Good thing for free streaming and instant rewind.

Tonight i'm just gonna but a ticket, everyone else will just have to bend to my plan.

@RandyC, I'm heading south soon, cold air doesn't usally go there.

Winter here is normally on two, non consecutive days below freezing point. I have a feeling this year it's already over. I still have baby tomatoe plants and lettuce growing outside. It's already 50F this morning at O-dark thirty before the glow comes over the dunes.

My turn to win as I realise Mikey was not speaking about his diminishing RAC and Keith is sleepless while trying to avoid winter. Oil fired central heating running flat out to counter today's dull 28F temperatures.

Heading for the hospital Monday for the final part of my treatment, the stem cell transplant to give me a new immune system. I will be disappeared for 3 weeks ot there abouts ...

What a bad morning, I knew i should have looked into this first. I spent the morning shutting down the server to add those HDDs. After having problems with a bad sata power connector i McGuyerized it into place and added some foam to push on it when the case is closed. I also fooled with rerouting the wires for the external raid array and making a cardboard back cover for it. It use to be an internal assembly.

I hate sata connectors. I've had more of those break or come loose since they came out with them than all other types of computer connectors put together over the previous 30+ years.

So anyhoo, I got the thing fired up only to discover the hardware from 2006 and/or the windows 2003 server software won't go beyond 2TB. In fact it is really weird, you only see the portion above 2TB. So 3TB - overhead - 2TB is 746GBish.

Well since there is so many problems here and getting updates or drivers plus that bad connector i decided to just pull those back out and rethink.

I think what i'll end up doing is replace the 500GB x 4 drives in my two stations with the 2 3TB drives plus get 2 more come spring when money flows again. Since those are windows seven and i had no problem in the other one i did do this would be easier and safer. That plus the other 2 in the other computer would give me 18TB avaialable space between 6 drives and 3 computers. Then too take the 500GB's and put 2 in the server where they fit and swap out a single 320GB partitioned into 2 160GB's in my third system for the other 2 500GB's. That gives me room to spare plus extra space here and there. It would be over 20TB space total. Also i'll take the 320GB and put it as a spare into another station then i'll still have some other drives not in use 1TB, 320GB i think.

I'll have to change my backup storage plan, but i can dedicate up to 500GB to be used for the data files and the other 2.5TB per dirve to be used for various image backups and split between the 4 drives the images i think. I can still keep a few on the server or other drives as needed or use that space for something else.

So all in all i think it was good things didn't work under plan A.

Keith it should see the 3tb as a secondary drive but NOT the primary drive. Windows, until recent updates, couldn't 'see' more than 2tb for the boot drive.
I saw a 4tb drive on sale this morning, only about $275 I think. AND they now have a 1tb usb stick available, not cheap but it is 'out there'!!

You answered your own question, until recent updates, um, not every thing 10 years old has recent uopdates.

So Nope it doesn't fully see it as it should, I even found an article on it

"Microsoft has discovered that certain storage drivers do not fully support single-disk capacities greater than 2TB. For example, overflow of numerical capacity beyond 2TB results in only being able to address the remainder of the capacity beyond 2TB. At the same time, the Hard Disk vendor will not provide the driver for 3TB HD."

That's exactly what I Saw.

It's too much trouble anyway. I also can't take the chanc of trying an update and knocking out the working parts, then i'd be in a real bind. Better to leave it as is and I'll just solve my problem another way and not depend on .... someone else's mess.

More silly is I got that off the lenovo website. lenovo is the new name for ibm computers. My server was ibm but that's the one that died. The hardware is now an HP but the raid array is still the ibm parts, except the hard drives which are i forget., but the raid array with hardware controler in a bus slot has nothing to do with the 3TB drives. They run off the sata buss.

It goes on to say this affects only windows erver 2003 r2

Solution
The user should use the 3TB hard disk drive in Microsoft Windows Server 2008, and later versions.

In other words, pay money [becuase we're too greedy].

It's not necessary i put 3TB drives on that unit, i have other options. So instead of messing with this any further, possiblly fowling up the working things or spending big bucks and consuming enourmous amounts of time I don't have in updates, i'm just going to move on and do something different with the 3TB drives. Besides musical hdd's sounds more fun. I can swap those around more easily and bulk move data from an old to a new across the network more easily than even trying to find help on the former situation.

Speaking of w&*king, which is taboo.....

Oh but first. Yesterday was winter. It got really cold, below 50F and the wind howled out of the nor'east. Today it already in the 60F's again. But we haven't seen the sun yet this year, no more than a few hours a day on less than half of the days so far. Today it is again foggy. We don't get much foggy here yet we've had like 4 days this year. It was bad driving to [here] as you could only see 3 cars in front of you and traffic lights was bad as you almost didn't see them until you were just at breaking distance. Fortunately i didn't see, or hear, any wreaks.

Oh some i'm board [here] today. I decided to fool with my new shipping estimator when i realized just recording the actual amounts for the 7 methods and averaging them would not function. One i already use and that is my base comparison. I had to add weight and i do it in ounces. So then i made a table that takes those amounts and divides it by ounce for reference. I use now a formula base of $6.00 plus 0.75 per pound, 0.75/16 for 0.05 per ounce since everything is weighed in ounces for websales, i do that on purpose for people ordering multiple light items at one time. So Another table subtracts the base fee to give an estimate per ounce of the remainer. Then those 7 estimates per package are averaged. I have a forth table where i can adjust the base fee per method and this table will show the remainder, good or bad per ounce, after taking out the base fee and the estiamte per ounce from table 3. This way i can modify the numbers as i add a fe more sample and try to get the remainder for the samples to within plus or minus 10 cents, hopefully mostly plus. After a while i'll have a good amount of sample to massage the numbers and get a good feel for base fees and the per ounce numbers, then probally bump them up for the extra handling for rushing.

Ooops, web order, gotta run....

It is up to 41F for me, so MUCH warmer than this morning when it was threatening to sleet. It is supposed to rain most of the day today then be down to about 32F overnight and then go up to about 43F tomorrow with some afternoon snow showers. It is not supposed to accumulate more than an inch though, and that on the grassy areas.

Just installed the JAVA update that 'fixes' the problem that Homeland Security is all upset about...now, when a JAVA app runs for the first time you get an annoying pop-up that asks you if it's OK to run the app. At least they give you a checkbox you can check so it won't ask you next time.

Yeah I did that on two of my pc's yesterday, the rest haven't come thru saying there is an update yet.

John as of the yesterday evening news I was supposed to be in the 4 to 6 INCH range for snow today, as of the 11PM news I am down to the dusting to maybe an inch range! This morning they are saying I am into the 2 to 4 inch range!! I am guessing Randy's wind blew harder and the cold air isn't going to come this far North now. The cold air is down South of me so maybe Keith is in for a cold blast!!

Another lovely FOGGY day. I'm beginning to think i live in san fran cisco.

Is the sun still there or did it burn out ?

And I came in early to think in the quiet and relearn some sql programming to make a new tool. I had some saved and a page of paper notes, when after 2 hours the power decided to spike and my ups dropped out because the battery is dead and it gave me no pre-warning. Yes I lsot a bunch of work and unsaved notes. To top that off i've forgotten yet another password and can't get into the stupid ups software. A search on the internet yeilds the only solution is to install the software and reinstall. I did the first half and said forget it.

I di have a spare battery on hand and a spare ups with a battery. I did a test by swapping the bad battery and it comes up bad in the other unit too. I keep any removable bits liek the 100 Amp Fuse (Holly Kow) and the plug harness. Some replacement batteries come without these now so i now have a few spares. I fact the one i bought was two seperate batteries, i just duck taped them together for easier insertion and ran a strip across the top plus a little more and folded it over to make a pull tab, so at next replacement i have something to grab and pull the battery out. I had to use a toll and pry the old one out a little at a time on each side until it came loose. Another thing as i forget now how old batteries are, is i put a duck tape label on the battery and wrote the datte, then i stuck a duck tape label on the front of the ups with the last replacement date. Works better than the silly software that doesn't remind you.

I HATE that, mine quit, a while ago now, also without any warning and I am not sure I even want to replace the batteries anymore. I am still using them as surge suppressors, just not battery backups anymore.

Keith I JUST found something for you and everyone else:
http://dealnews.com/Western-Digital-3-TB-USB-External-Hard-Drive-for-100-after-rebate-4-s-h/659115.html

It is a 3TB external hard drive for $100.00 AFTER rebate from Tigerdirect. Now in the past Tiger was REALLY BAD in their handling of rebates, so be warned! But even so the price is $139.00 before rebate. That means you could go machine to machine and either backup or restore them.

I am cruising thru the sale sites today, just like everyday, and thought you might be interested.

WINNING!!!

Watch deals klike that, a lot they are not as good as they sound. for instance you can get only one rebate. If you buy more your out the extra money. Also too i found tiger direct sells a lot of close out type merchandise, ie, old models. You can't always tell because they don't give you all the specs of what is hidden in that black box.

I'm using internal drives. I've had problems before, multiple times, with the external drives, the interface goes out. Sometimes the drive is ok, sometimes it scrabmles or wipes out your data. Also you taking a 3 or 6GB SATA drive and pumping it down to 480Mbps through USB, why ? I feel the need for speed.

My computers here might only be 1.5. But at home i am running some on the 3GB and some o nthe 6GB sata busses. My systems SCREAM. I know becuase i bougt bare drive where i could see the specs.

The drives i'm using now i got on amazon, bare, and know exatly the specs and only paid $135 for anyway. I'll pay a little extra to be sure i don't get the shaft.

Oh I use it all the time, I used on a couple of gpu fans just yesterday. The machine kept shutting down for no apparent reason so I took the 2 gpu's out and sure enough 1 of them had an almost stuck fan. I sprayed it and use the blower on it, sprayed it some more and after letting it sit for a little bit I hit it with the blower and ZOOM it took right off just like a brand new one! I sprayed the other fan too, just for good measure, let them both dry for a few minutes and the machine is back up and running just fine. In fact I probably won't be buying any more cans of air, I'll just use the blower. I LOVE IT!!! I think of you too when I use mine!

John I have an electric one of those too but it isn't plugged in so sits underneath other stuff and is a hassle to get out and use. When I got it I envisioned finding a permanent place for it where I could just flip a switch and it would be ready to go, that hasn't happened.

Randy my wife has today off, Lee Jackson Memorial Day, and then she has Monday off too for MLK day! I AM in Virginia and since we are in the South and the State still celebrates it's Southern Heroes from the Civil War and she works for the State, she has a 4 day weekend!! Most local jurisdictions quit celebrating the Civil War Heroes as holidays long ago, but not the State.

Not for me, I only get the regualr 2 day wee'end.

Hey, another way to get rid of dust bunnies is stop feeding them, only problem is i don't exactly know what they eat.

I need to do my fan grills at home, you can't see the dust much in the daytime, but a night when i turn the room lights off, those lighted fans purring along, you can see the gray patch covering them since they are backlit. At the beach we have a heavy dust problem as it's always windy and a lot of dust gets generated from wind across the sand, which we are actually on a giant sand bar, so there's not just sand at the beach, but in every yard.

Oh yeah, we got sun today, only the wind is blowing cold air in and the low-high for today is 39-41. But it does seem the sun is melting the clouds away finally. First day all year that has had full sun, i saw it on the way to [here] for the first time. It's kind of been only, if any, making an after noon 'til sunset appearance.

Keith think coffee filters...first you change ALL the fans on your pc so they blow into the pc, then you put a coffee filter over the outside and let it filter he air going in. I have personally never tried this but have read it worked for others. The natural case cracks let the air back out.

Sneaking in at o'dark-thirty for a kwick win.

The forecast for today only calls for bright yellowish, no greyness or wetness in sight. Then again i believe in santaclaus and fairies too.

Travel plans: will be flying to florida next Saturday for a while. Should be back within a week, return will possibly by kar with dad, but if his condition allows we may fly and one of the other brothers will drive the kar back. At this point one brother and his son are joining us there, the other possibly but i don't have confirmation yet. We'll be moving dad up here, temporarily to my brother's house which is 3 miles up the road from me. Then possibly dad will be in an assisted living care facility 3 miles the other way from me, 6 miles from my brother's house. Dad wanted to go to this one place up in Newport News but i think that was before he knew there was something closer to us. If we take him over and tour this place he may change his mind. If he is here my brother and i can visit more than once a week. if he is in Virginia then, well visits will be more like twice a month.

It's a work in progress, mostly it's a guide and the 'plan' will unfold itself as we go.

So i will be busy after a while so i'm getting as much other stuff done early. I got all my kar stuff done, inspected, repaired [big time] and register. Paid some property taxes not due until may, but its out of the way. Refigured my income taxes, I did those starting Christmas Day. But i didn't hav all the numbers then, that was pre-figuring. Today i only had 3 minor mistakes in my numbers, less than a dollar and one long term was written down as dividend, so minor change there. I get back $240 bucks, then have to pay the state an additional $24. Not bad.

Also I sold one of my old PS3's. Last night my roommate said his blu-ray broke in his, he was going to go buy a new PS3. He wanted to let me know becuase i have the router with the security set up and would be needing to change the mac id so it would work. I said, ya want to buy a used one that's been collecting dust for 3-4 years. I used it to boinc on PS3GRID but then when that went belly-up due to gpus i had extras i never used for anything else. So I made him a good deal, still have the box and books and everything else better than like new condition, well except for some dust on it. I even threw in free shipping and carried it downstairs for him. I sold it for $160. That was the going price on amazon for used ones. I haven't used it and still have my other one i haven't used in 3-4 years either. I'm luckky really to just get rid of it. I had wanted to sell it online, but there are 61 other people selling thiers. So i feel i got a good deal too jsut to quickly get rid of it with less hassles than putting it online for sale, which is why i hadn't quite got around to that yet. Better still was the mac id is still registered in my router so i didn't even have to change anything, sweet. We just reset it and he made his own user account. Better for him too he was back to palying games or watching video without ever having to go out to the store. It could have been days before he found a new one.

Better still there's time to go make griddler-cinnamon-cakes for breakfast !

It seems to me it's 6:33am and time for BREAKFAST again.

Later might be 2nd Breakfast.

I was sleepish all day yesterday. could not wake up, but could not really sleep either. Kept dozing off. Around 1:30pm when i finally almost fell into a relaxed sleep, the phone rang. After that I still never went to sleep or stayed awake.

[sorry dozed off there]

With so many Breakfast breaks, I don't kow when there is time for winning

Sorry that you can't sleep, do you think it could be you worrying about the ramifications of your dad moving?
It is now 7:10AM and it is my turn to be WINNING!!!

[Gorged on Cinnamon Pancakes] I'm sitting down now resting.

Yeah I think worrying about his condition is a good choice for the cause. There's not a lot of other [bad] things going on [as usual]. I usually don't have problems sleeping and if I do it only lasts part of one night. This has gone on several over a week. I think yesterday was trying to catch up on missed sleep but i though i sleep through the night rateher well so i don't know why i was sleepy all day, unless I ate too many cinnamon pancakes at breakfast. I try not to worry, I know it will all work out somehow and i've been (well I thought) prepared for this for some time. Mom and Dad talked about "the end" for like the last 13 years of visits. Then going through Mom's situation ending Oct 2011, I knew Dad's would not be too far off even though he was in better condition than Mom. I guess we boys should have pushed harder to get him to move near us sooner, because he has been on his own and my understanding from talking with neighbors, his situaton has been going down hill about the last 6 months. It's been 11 since we last saw him, but from talking with him on the phone, he didn't let on everything. But we had already been working on a plan for the last 2-3 years to get him up here. He was sort of ready as he had put the house up for sale about 6 months ago.

He's one of those in that doesn't want to be a burden to thier kids. But I think myself and at least one of my other brothers don't feel that, we feel we should give something back for the good way he raised us for the first 18 years of our lives, we want to help, to be with him.

I'm just amazed though he has made it to 91.5
