I just join malariacontrol.net today and I can\'t compute files starting by opt_ (The application used seems to be \"Estimation of parameters of infection dynamics 1.21\") |

The optimizer application and tasks need Java to be installed. |

By the way, you don\'t have to have java installed, the new version comes with its own java distribution. |

By the way, you don\'t have to have java installed, the new version comes with its own java distribution. Manually install Java from http://www.java.com and see if that fixes it. The auto installer may not be working right on your machine. ____________ |

Ok. thanks. Java\'s installed now. But did I return something interesting with this WU WU 5920057 which claimed nothing and seems to have 0 CPU time (it takes me about 2h to crunch) ? Here\'s the task detail Thank you. |

Estimation of infection crunch for 11 mn advencement 0.00% is it ok? |

Estimation of infection crunch for 11 mn advencement 0.00% is it ok? Yes, Optimizer 1.26 does not show progress. Optimizer 1.26 has a 2 hours max run, when it gets to that point even if it is not finished it will stop. It is normal for them to be shorter, but they should never exceed 2 hours. |

Yes, Optimizer 1.26 does not show progress. Optimizer 1.26 has a 2 hours max run, when it gets to that point even if it is not finished it will stop. It is normal for them to be shorter, but they should never exceed 2 hours The opposite had been happening here lately. wu applications had been coming with very short times (13 minutes or less) and would not show any progress until a sudden 100%, usually in about 8-9 minutes (not bad for my single-core AMD Athlon 64 3800+, only two years old but already outdated compared to the machines I see out there running BOINC...). opt applications had been coming with extraordinarily long times (over 50 hours, typically), but progress was shown and the \"remaining time\" plummeted quickly to zero, often completing the task in less than one hour. Why the past tense in the paragraph above? Because my PC has just received and is currently running a certain opt_23_-31469_5_208421693_0. (Whew, this felt like typing the long bar codes of my utility bills when I pay them through my Internet banking... I haven\'t felt like a bar code reader was worth the cost yet.) It is due for Jan. 21 at 03:20, with an estimated duration of 54:16:15 that won\'t come down, and \"progress\" stays at a round, steady 0.000. Most likely, when you read this and this message is replied, something will already have happened - either it will \"kill itself\" at 2 hours, as stated earlier, or I will have cancelled it myself out of nervousness... The problem is, these changes of behavior without much or any warning are not good for users, who may unnecessarily be alarmed and abort what is normal operation, afraid of \"parasitizing\" other BOINC projects. As for Java: are these opt applications dependent on which JRE version one is running? I am running JRE 1.6.0_03, the latest one as of today (just checked it), but some other apps (not BOINC-related) seem to have trouble with Java 1.6.x. Also, there is a good reason why Java is an optional or \"opt-in\" component - it may crash some users\' apps when present (especially in corporate environments), and may degrade the PC\'s performance in some other cases. This is not my case: I work from home and need Java for many other things, so it doesn\'t affect me. But I\'d just like to point out that if a user accepts to run the opt apps and they install Java without his/her knowledge or without him/her understanding the implications, this is not a good thing... :-( ____________ ----------------- UrsoBR São Paulo, Brazil |

See Post https://malariacontrol.net/forum_thread.php?id=518&nowrap=true#4326 ...optimizer version 1.25. It contains a bundled java runtime environment, so if everything goes well, you can run the optimizer app now without having java installed. That should pave the way to leave the \"testing\" status sooner or later. ...Java Runtime Environment file will run Java for you without you needing to install Java separately. Sort of a virtual Java for that application only. The \"estimation of Parameters of infection dynamics\" application with the \'opt....\' tasks, called optimizer for short, will run anywhere up to 2 hours time, they are design to terminate should they reach the 2 hour mark (give or take a little). You should not have any run 50 hours. You are probably referring to the estimate BOINC places on the task, it will self correct the estimate with each task it runs, You should ignore the estimate it shows you. The \"opt\" tasks do not show progress until complete, when it may show 100% for a short while. Typically you will get many that run the same length, then suddenly this length of time will change (not to exceed the maximum of 2 hours), it all depends on the set of parameters set by the scientists. Just note they time of these will vary. Most all of this has previously been covered several times. Please see the \'Third Science application\' thread which has more details throughout. There should be no need to cancel any tasks, if you are that nervous about them, then you probably should not be running them in the first place. With any testing, alpha and beta projects, this should be accepted as it is going to happen, while the developers try to produce error free work, it is just the nature of the beast, there are too many different computers with different software running to account for all possibilities. If you cannot accept the possible risk of some loss, do not run it. |
