Is there a write up that describes the graphics?

Crunching away....

Hi Keith. Just a question: I really enjoyed the malariacontrol screen-saver: colorful and intuitive. But, right now I CAN'T access it, no graphic is available. Is this a fact or just a problem involving my machine? In any case, why?
I already thank you for the reply :-)

Depends on what version BOINC you are running. There was a change in the way the core client handles this.

The old way, graphis was included with the application.

The new way has graphics and/or screen saver as an external separate program to the application. The drawback being each project needs to redo thier stuff. Unfortunately not all projects have the manpower and/or knowledge to rewrite the graphics.

I believe the case here in that the original person that wrote the graphics is no longer with the team. I beleive they have plans to rewrite, but as things go, the science has more priority over graphics.

This is absolutely true Keith, thank you! I'm running BOINC version 6.6.38, standard installation. To have no graphics is NOT really a problem for me. Only, some users choose projects asking themselves if it has a beautiful screensaver or not.
Anyway, continue keep us informed about the progress and the science behind, I'm going to crunch more in this project.

Have a good day

There were graphics in older versions. Due to changes in BOINC core versions, the old style graphics no longer function. There is no one avaialable at this time to re-write a new graphics module. See my previous post # 11067.

Graphics are cool but I turn them off to conserve power. I just use a blank screen for a screen saver and my monitor turns off in 5 minutes. The best use for the graphic is to attract attention from those who are not running any BOINC projects and encourage them to start.

Hmm... sorry for the very late reply. Keith's absolutely right here; I'm don't expect the graphics component would need a _complete_ rewrite, but I'm sure you'd all agree that the science application is really the main focus here!

As swiftmallard pointed out, running the graphics component does also use some computing power and thus reduce work-unit computation performance (although malariacontrol doesn't use GPUs for computation).
