This article in The Economist says Africa@Home is going to commence a cartographic project utilising BOSSA. I\'ve had a look at the A@H website and couldn\'t see any references to this.

Care to shed some light on this? Like where can we sign up ? :D

The article is accurate - there is a team in Ghana, and also one in Central African Republic, working on this application for UNOSAT with the support of Africa@Home. However, the BOSSA platform is in a pre-alpha stage, and this will be a pretty sophisticated use of it anyhow, so don\'t expect anything you can sign up to for a while (>6 months). We\'ll try to get some information about this and other upcoming applications on the Africa@home website soon (before year end).

Are there any updates on this? Do you have an approximation of when the project will be available to sign up by?

As far as I know, this project is currently on hold. I think the next phase is being planned, but it may be some time before it is ready for sign up.

I remember reading somewhere that development was halted in February 2009, but that it was to be resuming in August 2009 (now). Can anyone confirm this?

The Africa@home needs a major update!

The last press release was from 2006. The last news item is from 2007.

This is critical now, especially since the Facebook BOINC client refers to this project as africa@home, and not malaria@home.

Money ran out for the Africa@home/BOSSA project about a year ago. It has progressed on best effort basis, but a lot more slowly. The good news is that CERN, the UN satellite imagery initiative UNOSAT (part of the UN Institute for Training and Research) and the University of Geneva are really keen to pursue this project via a new Citizen Cyberscience Centre they are jointly setting up. A call for sponsors has just been launched (http://www.unitar.org/citizen_cyberscience_centre_project) so we hope to get going again on this very soon, with African scientists taking the lead on the software development. In the meantime, a summer student at CERN has been doing a skunkworks project to port the necessary software to the iPhone. Well post a link to that as soon as theres something about it up on the web.

A website for the Citizen Cyberscience Centre is currently under development. I'll link to this from here once it is up.
