Message 6116 - Posted 24 Apr 2008 5:27:17 UTC

I have a problem which started yesterday afternoon (23APR2008) I have a dual core system with 4GB of RAM. Yesterday I began to encounter errors on workunits. Typically one CPU runs OK but the other never gets further than 59 seconds and then reports an error. I have encountered no problems with other programs and the diagnostics I have run indicate it is not a hardware problem.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks
    Tracey

Is the same thing happenning on all your projects, or just this one? What version of Boinc are you running? Do you have Java loaded? What else is using your pc besides Boinc? Lots of us use our pc\'s all the time but if you have something special running that is running calculations, or otherwise using the cpu\'s maybe your pc is getting confused and Boinc is more sensitive to the errors.

I am only running MC on this unit and not SETI so I don\'t know if it is only MC.

I am running version 5.10.30 of BOINC and the pc stands idle most of the time since it is my gaming rig. AFAIK I have not installed Java and I turn BOINC off before logging onto the BF2 servers.

I have several other computers running MC none of which are showing this problem so I believe it is something specific to this pc. Right now I am at work but I will get a couple of SETI work units and see if they do the same thing.
        Thanks

OK, I signed this pc up for SETI and downloaded several work units including what looked like a program update for BOINC and MC now seems to be OK. All my other computers run both projects, could the SETI update really be the fix? LOL Too easy!!

I don\'t think so, but it could be. I used to run Seti on many of my machines but over time have reloaded all but one or two and all of my 22 machines run MC just fine. Now Java could be a problem, yes MC is supposed to load a version of Java if it needs it but I ALWAYS go to http://www.java.com and do it myself.

I finally halted my work on this project due to the messages:

2008-05-06 17:39:11|malariacontrol.net|Task opt_37_-7579_5_879134558_2 exited with zero status but no \'finished\' file
2008-05-06 17:39:11|malariacontrol.net|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
              2008-05-06 17:39:11|malariacontrol.net|Restarting task opt_37_-7579_5_879134558_2 using optimizer version 134

These repeat about every 40-50 seconds. And that was after resetting the project twice.

The project has worked fine for months and months. No recent changes were made, though a couple months ago I increased RAM from 1 GiB to 3 GiB. It\'s a dual Athlon on XP SP2.

I appreciate your anguish, but it\'s not necessary to halt the entire project, unless you\'re really fed up with us. :) You can choose not to run the optimizer wu\'s in the malariacontrol section of your account preferences.

As Chris said just go thru and abort all the OPT units, someone else will crunch them, and change your settings to NO here: \"Run test applications?
This helps us develop applications, but may cause jobs to fail on your computer\"
It is under Your Account, Resource share and graphics.
