I run Avast anti-virus software. It is yellow flagging openMalariaBeta_6.63_windows_intelx86 and recomending I run it in the sandbox.

In addition, it is behaving very strangely. It starts, runs for 15 seconds, (3.497% done - varies slightly), then goes back to "----" and then starts again.

It is running, (maybe...), wu_1222_512_6499_0_1334675480_0. I've suspended it awaiting advice.

I'm running an up to date Windows XP on this system.

Hmmm ???

That sounds like a false positive to me. I run ESET Smart Security (also on an up to date XP system) and it thinks the file is clean.

My BoincView logs show that I've run 189 of the wu_1222_* tasks with openMalariaBeta_6.63_windows_intelx86 and none of them behaved as you describe (160 completed successfully, 17 failed with exit status 74 as detailed here and 12 were aborted as they had exit status 74 errors on other systems).

I can only think of a couple of places which might give some indication of what's causing the tasks to fail and restart:

  1. The stderr.txt file in the task's slot directory.
  2. The Windows event log.

One thing most of us have done is exclude the Boinc directory from our AV scanners, as it only connects to Boinc Servers if it is infected and doesn't infect other files on your pc, who cares! BUT if it is a virus it WILL try to infect other parts of your pc and then it would be caught by your AV program! There are LOTS of things the AV software is 'learning' to watch and the Boinc folks are just people, not experienced AV folks, mistakes happen all the time.

The starting and then restarting of your workunits is a different problem and you need to tell us what version of Boinc you are using as well as what OS you are using. Also some details on what tweaks you have made, to both Boinc and your pc, would be helpful too.

I'll put the start/restart into another thread, it is not relevent to the topic title of this one. Truth, I was on here to report the Avast issue and happened to notice this in the manager window as I was writing the first bit!

In fact, I think the issue with Avast may be due to an upgrade that came yesterday. My wifes laptop also started throwing warnings about something in Adobe's files I noticed later. I've had no problems with Avast until yesterday.

I just started my wifes laptop and first thing that happened was an Avast update was downloaded...
